Red face Addon Domain Question

Hey guys/girls I need help. I feel like I should know how to do this so this is kinda embarrassing.

Suppose I had a user who created a subdomain. How would he/she have a domain point to this subdomain and act like a regular web hosting account.

Is this a feature under addon domains under the Cpanel. I tried that and I keep getting a funny error message. Or would this be a DNS feature that I need to add.
Please help I’m lost and I know I have done this before.
Thank

1- the subdomain is a 'real domain'. fred.smithfamily.net

but, if they want to point another domain TO that directory, you use an addon domain.

2 -You create the subdirectory, then in the ADDON domain screen, you type the name of the domain 'fredsstuff.com' to the directory smithfamily.net/fred

John

PS - you have to buy the domain first, and assign it the proper name servers for number 2 to work..

Hey BigJohn thanks for your reply.
But where you have
"directory smithfamily.net/fred"

It wouldnt be the full path like "/home/fred_user_name/public_html/fred"
I ask because it says enter in
"Username/directory/subdomain Name:"

Im just asking, and I really do thank you for trying to help me out.

/public_html/fred

is correct, because the 'account name' is ignored if you're in that 'account' cpanel.
