Extra Drive Option

Is it possible to get another drive added to my dedicated server, and have them set up as a mirrored RAID? I'm not clear on whether or not I can after I've had the server for a while.

I'd like to have a mirrored raid so my customers don't have to worry about their data being lost if a drive dies. Just lookin' out for 'em.

Thanks!

I would like to know this as well. Would this just be a back up to restore from or an actual instant switch mirror of the other drive for minimal downtime?

This can be done, but keep in mind, it requires a special controller or motherboard, which means replacing even more hardware in your server.

If you think you need this option, it is best to do it when you order your server, and not afterwards. Cause once you request the upgrade, we have to setup the raid, then copy your current HD to the new raid setup, and it takes more time and will cause quite a bit of downtime during the whole procedure. There just isn't an easy way to go from no RAID to RAID.

bassdaddy:

RAID mirrors are just that, mirrors. They don't provide instant swap overs in case the main drive fails. A RAID mirror is simply two hard drives. Everytime the first hard drive gets written to, the second one does as well. If the first hard drive dies, then the whole system dies, but the contents remain on the second drive. Another drive has to be added into the system to replace the dead drive and then it has to rebuild itself.

daily nightly automatically for you

If I do the backup drive method. What is the process when the primary drive fails? How long is the server down?

If I had a lot of busy shoping cart programs, would that be enough reason to get a raid set up? What is the charge to go with raid versus just a second drive?

You can have 3 drives then we set two on software raid
and the other as backup

price is $75 setup for the raid then the cost of the extra 3rd drive

I have yet to see a drive fail while a server is in action

I seen more of, accounts being deleted by mistake so the backup
solution would fly better in my plane

I hope you all don’t mind me adding some more questions.
But I was wondering.
Regarding the method of adding a second drive for backing up.
In case of a disaster and the 1st/primary drive fails how long would it take to get data restored and things back up operational?
I’m also concerned about backing my customer’s data up and how long things would actually be down if something went wrong.
