Streaming Audio?

I'm developing a music promotion site. I'm on a shared server at the moment.

The site will contain allot of mp3 files. Could anyone tell me how many simultaneous connections (.mp3 streams) a shared acount /dedicated server can cope with.

There was a post that said each shared server account was allowed 15 connections but I'm sure that doesnt mean a shared server could cope with 15 .mp3 streams. :hiding:

Just trying to figure out wether my venture is viable or not. :titanic:

its going to depend on a lot of variables. What bitrate are the files recorded at? (and do you have license to use them in this manner)....

Are you trying to 'stream' the audio? or just transfer it via HTTP? If you're streaming - like internet radio - it is probably more cpu intensive to the server than if you were to just let them be downloaded via HTTP.

IF they're just HTTP requests, then a shared server could probably let you transfer 15-20 at a time if they're reasonable sizes. A dedicated server probably 1000 or more.

I'm not sure what bitrate the files will be encoded at. The music is provided by the artists that produced it. They must agree to our T&C's before we will host there music.

Yes it's just HTTP.

What happens when there are to many connections? Do you know if it would it be possible to use php to disable streaming on the site when the server reaches max load?

1000 connections is allot when your just hosting html/php becouse each connection doesnt last very long. With mp3s/large files I dont think 1000 go that far.

So this is just a music download site? Not say, an internet radio? I would not suggest that at all, considering everytime a new user is downloading, it would probably drop the download rate to about an average of 16 kb/s.

In the order of HTTP for server load, I'm not aware of many commands to do with server configuaration, but that is not my area of expertise.

Maybe someone else will pitch in

Yes, we will only be streaming audio via http using .m3u playlists (I think). I suppose this is just downloading as the audio is a static file. I always thought it was called streaming as the file is downloaded as it plays.

That type of connection is not massivly straining to a server - because the request is processed and served.

what size files are they typically?

They will be short 2 min previews. We will have two bitrates for each track. The file sizes will be between 700KB and 1500KB.
