Considering getting a dedicated...
Hey folks,
I'm thinking about getting a dedicated server. I currently have two reseller accounts for hosting and, as great as the plans are, I'm a little concerned about the space and my pricing scheme. My plans are fairly low, I look to make profit off quantity instead of quality, so to say. I'm thinking about grabbing the first dedicated plan, and maybe hosting a few dedicated game servers as well as my web host accounts to help cover, if not pay for the cost of the dedicated. I'm interestd in Counter Strike, Battlefield and possibly Battlefield: Vietnam, and Quake 3 Arena dedicateds. I checked some server hosting requirments and from what I could find, most are substantial off 256mb of ram and less than a gig of processor power. About how many dedicated servers you think I could host on the standard Intel Celeron 1.7Ghz 400Mhz Bus server? Keep in mind that I will try and host sites from it as well if possible. Those two terabytes and 80gigs are quite tempting... Thanks in advanced

Unleashed can probably help more than me, but I'll tell you that you would not want to host more than a couple of game servers on there if you plan to host a dozen domains. You get more flexibility with the P4 server. Either way, you're going to want RAM. Lots of it. The system will slow noticeably if it has to keep swapping to disk.

I would get 2 gigs memory for both games and sites and posibly the P4
I personaly think that a gameserver and a webserver should never go together but thats my opinion

Makes sense
I understand how you feela bout the gaming servers and web server being on the same machine. Could any surpass techies tell me what I could expect my server loads to be like if I did go with the P4 server and maybe a gig of ram? With web hosting and then with gaming servers if possible?
Maybe you could check a server that hosts games and show me the seperate server loads for it and its specs? I'm just investigating this at the moment, but if I can get my hosting deals to pick up and maybe a few peope interested in gaming servers, I'll jump on it.

Most gamming servers run around 80% of the CPU you can run two gaming servers and keep the server load around 90% if your running a BF1942 or Vietnam try to keep the max players below 32
If you get a busy game the other game and the webserver will be really slow If you get a busy site (chances are really, really good you will) the whole server will be slow to respond

Well I'm probably going to end up getting a dedicated anyway and I guess move all my accounts over there. I just got a request for more space. With the current clients that I have now, plus this potential, none of the reseller packages will do. So I'm waiting to hear from him again and a response from upgrades to see how to handle this. As far as the gaming server. I will more than likely scrap that idea until I can generate more traffic. Thanks for your help Unleashed.

Well, after careful consideration, I've decided to go ahead and get a Dedicated with Surpass. I placed my order yesterday, hopefully I'll soon be up cause I'm down to my last few megs of storage space on my reseller accounts. I've disabled account sign ups until the switch is complete.
Think I'm gonna go ahead and email upgrades to add WHM Autopilot monthly for a few months until I can get some really good steady profit coming in. Sucks being a college student :-P

Well, I thought I was gonna switch to a dedicated? I placed the order on the 20th at 12:20pm but I haven't heard anything from anyone yet. I have two reseller accounts and one is completely full and the other can only how about 2 more accounts. I figured I'd be down for about 24 hours so I made the necessary changes to my site to disable orders until the change is completed. I think i changed my site to tell about the site changes around 2pm on the same day I ordered. I noticed on my order that I had entered my phone number wrong. But then I would have gotten an email if thats what was holding things up.
Is there any clue what the deal is? I'm waiting on the dedicated and my Autopilot license. Eman, if you can hear me buddy...I need you...rescue me from this...pit...of... I'm sorry, lack of sleep and no caffine makes you say weird things. HelP?! BTW, yea, I emailed upgrades a few times and replied to serversales... ![]()
