Webmin Configuration

(new dedicated server customer here...)

Messing around with Webmin (webmin.com) as an open-source alternative to Cpanel... however, from what I can tell, the installation defaulted to incorrect paths and I'm not sure where to find the correct paths. Most of the features are directing me to a module configuration page where I must supply the correct paths.

i.e. what's the path to the httpd executable? It defaulted to /usr/sbin/httpd but insists that that is incorrect.

anyone familiar with webmin that can explain to me why it is doing this?

mmm... found this...

"A common problem after installing Webmin, is that some modules do not work, or do not seem to work completely. This can be caused by some of the software being installed in non-standard locations on your system. By default, when Webmin is installed, it creates a configuration for each module based on the standard filesystem structure and configuration file locations for your selected OS. If you have installed software from source tarballs instead of packages, or packages from a different source than your OS vendor, Webmin may not be able to find the files it needs to function correctly. Correcting these problems is usually a simple matter of modifying the configuration for the individual modules to match the actual locations of your configuration files."

hi harelin,
if you´re familar with linux maybe you get webmin to work quiet ok. but webmin isn´t secure, i´ve tried it for some month, never get satisfied.

for me it was much easier to configurate the server by hand (console).

if you want to host, cpanel - whm - whmap is unbeatable (for me) and they save a lot headache that you will get with webmin.

but give it a trie, you will learn a lot. hope i find the link to an very good webmin-faq-site, i will post it later.

It really depends on your OS, try usr/local/sbin or use find or locate from the shell.

I use Webmin, Usermin, and Virtualmin on one basic server and a WHM/cPanel server. It's absolutely unbeatable for changing DNS zones, httpd.conf and running shell commands. Sure you can do everything in ssh, but Webmin allows you to give control and limit control to other users. I highly recommend it for beginners and veterans.
