Reseller-->Dedicated : Walking the right path

I hope I don't confuse anyone with this post. I am just trying to figure out the best way to do this and thought you guys could help me brainstorm and give me tips on how to go down the path from reseller to dedicated. I have a reseller account [for simplicity sake, we'll call it SITE1.COM]. Now, I am itching bad for a dedicated but I am also in the planning stages of a reorganization where my domain name will change [thus becoming SITE2.COM], plans will change, etc.

SITE1.COM has customized domain servers. All hosted domains are pointed to NS1/2.SITE1.COM. My original plan was create dedicated using SITE2.COM and then just transfer SITE1.COM under the dedicated as a reseller package. Seems like the easiest way to go. Therefore leaving all the old settings the same and the few customers I have won't be too put out b/c all that would be needed to change would be the IPs of the nameservers and the IPs of their cPanels, etc.

I may be wrong about this approach but from what I've been reading [all forum posts and the surpass dedicated server guide] this is the simplest approach to take. If you have a better idea about this, please give me your thoughts.

So, my main concern is how do I start this whole process? I have not registered SITE2.COM as I'm unsure as the easiest path to take in the process. Can anyone submit, in the clearest way possible, exactly the best way to start this? I want to make this as simple as possible and have a smooth transition. Eventually, I would like all hosted accounts to be moved under SITE2.COM and be able to remove all references to SITE1.COM.

I have 2 1/2 months of free hosting left on my reseller [thnx to the awesome contests on the site] and now would be an excellent time to make the transition while I wouldn't have to be paying for both a dedi and my reseller account.

I hope I am explaining this clearly enough. It's very early and my caffeine intake has not reached its full potential yet. I look forward to hearing your comments on this as, like I said earlier, I have been itching for a dedi for a while now.

I would contact surpass, tell them of your plans, register the other site, and ask them to move it while you change around the NS... Good Luck

Won't I not know what the new ns would be until after I set up the server? I mean, from what I've read, you set up the server, then create the NS from there in the server settings. So wouldn't I have to wait to get that setup first? Also, when I register the domain name, how do I know where to point the NS for that to?

This is the response I received from support in case anyone was interested in the answer. I left out the names and other things for privacy sake since technically I did not get permission to post this on the forum. I'm not even sure if I needed to or not. If I did, some forum moderator can feel free to delete this one.

If you transfer site1.com as a reseller, you'll have to do this later, so why not just do it all now.

Either way, however, would be fairly straight forward and simple.
I've sent a response back asking if they would do it for me (in leiu of me doing it myself as I would probably really jack it up) but haven't received a response back yet. I think I've read somewhere that they would but you guys know how I am....20 questions!

No doubt!

I can't even light my cigarette correctly unless I've had at least a cup. I have a serious caffeine addiction. I'm in Germany for a little while and a couple of weeks ago, I discovered this German coffee..... a.k.a. "legal crack". It's the most awesome thing in the world. I call it legal crack b/c like crack, you get a huge buzz but you come down REAL hard if you don't keep drinking it. lol

P.S. did you know they make gum with caffeine in it? how stinking cool is that?!?

They make a lot of crazy things with caffeine in them...

Good Luck with the server move. I actually had the same idea for when (if) i moved to a reseller. Let me know how it goes!
