colocation question about equipment purchase(s)

it was my intent to go dedicated in the next year if i got to learn the things i need to know and such but i see the colocation prices and am debating if can accelerate my business plan somewhat.

one thing im concerned about is sending a "server" from Canada. I had actually built a computer here in Canada one time and sent it to a friend in missouri. i was rather proud of the computer as it only cost me 65 bucks because i have so many spare parts lying around the house. Unfortuneately it was right when the Iraq war started and if us immigration didnt completely dissassemble the entire computer crossing the border... giving the reciever with no technical knowledge a box of parts.lol

Anyways .. i am just making an initial inquiry about purchasing computer products in florida itself and arranging shipping from there. Any reccomendations for places to buy so i can start looking at costs for going colocation? Or are there any other reccomendations?

Tia
(thanks in advance)

There's newegg.com ... zipzoomfly.com

But I don't think you shouldn't have a problem shipping a computer here. We have received huge servers via major shipping carriers. Some have been from Canada.

I am having a hard time with getting more information from coloction. Sales[at]surpasshosting.com will not respond to my questions, its been 3 days, so I will ask them here.

-What happens if there is a hardware failure on our servers? How will we be notified and who will fix it?

-Do your routers run on 1000 mbps? Should we install the server with a gigabit NIC?

-What software do you need on the server when its shipped? linux? or do you install everything including the OS?

-24x7 Access? I get 24x7 Access to my server physically?

-whats Premium Bandwidth Only suppose to mean?

-How many mbps do the reseller servers get?

-What kind of raid do you suggestion we put on our servers?

-Do we need to purchase 19 Inch Mounting Slide Rails & Mounting Kit when we ship the server?

-When we are done with coloction do you just ship the server back?

-Do you have some type of contract to fill out when starting coloction with you?

It depends on the motherboard (mobo). Mobo's come in all SIZES.

Here are some example the basic one's might have only 10/100, a "super dooper" will have dual (2) Gigabit LAN Ethernet connection and the rest would have everything in between.

So do you have to install a NIC, No because most of them, not all, now come with Gigabit installed on the mobo. So you would have to read up on the specs for the mobo before you buy.

I would say RAID Level 1, which is mirroring the drives

You've gotten no reply at all from sales? ODD.

try emailing e at surpasshosting

I think he's the guy to answer your questions....

I can take a swag at a few:

Colo is typically used for "other" applications, not 'hosting servers', so if you COLO you should have the box built to your specifications.

Repair - This is quite probably negotiable per customer. I would imagine that you'd want them to do it. It might be cost-effective for you to include a hot-standby spare server...

Premium bandwidth only just refers to the fact that they are connected to some good upper-tier circuit providers, not running your server off of a business DSL line....

I'm sure they have a contract, and I'm certain that they'll give you your machine back after the contract expires, after all it is YOUR machine.

As to NIC - 100mb nic is going to be just fine for 99% of applications...

John

Dotmatr,

I have searched all over the desk for the ticket you are referring to but can't seem to locate it. In any case here it goes ...

-What happens if there is a hardware failure on our servers? How will we be notified and who will fix it?

We can fix it and we will let you know before hand of the cost for the hardware to fix it. You can approve or not no obligation.

-Do your routers run on 1000 mbps? Should we install the server with a gigabit NIC?

We do have giga ports but those are for the switches, regardless a server can not push 1000mbits so any nic will do

-What software do you need on the server when its shipped? linux? or do you install everything including the OS?

We will take care of it upon request at no charge

-24x7 Access? I get 24x7 Access to my server physically?

Yes you do 24x7

-whats Premium Bandwidth Only suppose to mean?

that means we don't have cheap bandwidth providors we have Tier 1 providors

TimeWarner Telecomm and MCI / Uunet

-How many mbps do the reseller servers get?

10mbit ports

-What kind of raid do you suggestion we put on our servers?

raid 1 with backup drive

-Do we need to purchase 19 Inch Mounting Slide Rails & Mounting Kit when we ship the server?

no just the server itself will be fine

-When we are done with coloction do you just ship the server back?

Yes we will ship it back upon request

-Do you have some type of contract to fill out when starting coloction with you?

No contracts just month to month
