Dedicated Server Basics

This tutorial is meant for dedicated server clients only. Once logged in as root you should see something like this.

root[at]yourservername [~]#

This means your are logged in as root on your server, and are at /root (~) directory. If your server is performing slow, or giving you problems. type 'w' and push enter to see some basics.

root[at]yourservername [~]# w
11:23am up 19 days, 9:41, 1 user, load average: 0.72, 0.75, 0.22
USER TTY FROM LOGIN[at] IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
root pts/3 151.198.85.20 11:21am 1.00s 0.02s 0.01s w

The main thing you're looking for here is the load average. Here's how to read it.

load average: 0.72, 0.75, 0.22

The first reading is the minutely average, .72.
The second is the five minute average, .75.
The third reading is the entire hour, .22.

As long as your server load is below 3, you should not experience any slowness, and you shouldnt have a cause to worry. If your load is above 10, call your admin if you have one, if not, contact us to check it out!

Hmm, I think the 3rd value is the load average for 15 minutes.

Quote:
uptime gives a one line display of the following information. The current time, how long the system has been running, how many users are currently logged on, and the system load averages for the past 1, 5, and 15 minutes.
My workstation's load! 0.92, 0.89, 0.96

yes well a few things for now. i tried with no success to set up a reseller nameserver. i started a thread here and someone was helpful but it didnt work out. Right now , i am reading all threads about mail management. i just got an email to an account i have for one of my sites ... asking for chase bank information to correct my account online. THIS is a VERY BAD email to get. im not even sure if i should forward it to surpass to check it out or not. The spam was nonexistant for about a week after moving to a dedi but it seems to have found me/us.I cant figure out its origin as i cant with most emails i get in my outlook.

What are other common tasks us as dedi owners should be montoring or checking? I go through the whm almost on a nightly basis , i dont see anything out of the ordinary...lol... but then ... i probably dont have a clue what i should be looking for either..lol

Good question. I'm never really bothered by it, but it's probably something I should look into changing at some point.
