Moving from Reseller to Dedicated Question

What exactly am I going to need to know in regards to using a Dedicated Server option? I am running a reseller one at the moment, and eventually I want to move to a dedicated server (due to the resources, space, bandwith, etc), but I'm completely stupid when it comes to Linux at the moment...well, more like a labotimized brick...if bricks had brains...that were laboto--, nevermind. Basically I'm wondering what the difference is. I mean, WHM and CPanel make it easy in the reseller package. Click, click, click, click "OH CRAP!" clickclickclickclickclick "ah, fixed". Know what I mean? Is there any massive amount of technical expertise I need to suddenly develope over night or is this something I could actually just switch over to and have no problem with?

if you move to a dedi with cpanel/whm, you'll be fine.

You'll have root access, but remember surpass still manages the server for you. Stuff you don't feel good about, they can take care of. And you can learn as you go.

Wish I had the $$$ to be dedi!

Ah, that's what I was hoping. Yeah, the money part is always one of the deciding factors. I'll just have to cut back on my many boxes of Ramen noodles I go through every month, and slow down my DVD buying...limit my many trips to walmart every week...and mcdonalds...hell, I might be a millionare if I stop all this now that I think about it.

I have a home server running Mandrake 10 now in my attempt to teach myself, but my isp blocks the port for FTP and I hate Webmin.

What exactly is the difference between the "No Setup" boxes and the ones that don't have that. When I imagine it, I always see it as the no set up one is just there, not plugged in, in the box, waiting for me to drive to Florida to do it myself. But, I am strange beyond words so that might explain it.

I also read in the TOS, something about getting a backup option? I don't see one listed on the Dedi page. What would this entail exactly? Is there a way to backup without using some other paid service?

cash in advance. If you pay a setup fee, you get a reduced monthly charge.

you can buy mirroring. This is something you'd have to talk with them about. Or Unleashed - he's a dedi customer.

oh yeah, unleashed seems to be King when it comes to Dedicated stuff lol

I think maybe in a couple months I may end up moving into a dedicated box, provided I can get all of my projects moving the way I want them to. =P

Yeah, Bigjohn is correct. You will just need to start off slow and let us help troubleshoot problems as you go along. Eventually you will start picking up a lot of it and learn as the problems come up. Just don't go overboard and try to do something you have no clue about. You are already on the right path, since you have linux running already and can start learning like that. I would recommend you drop Mandrake and go with Red Hat though, since there are structural differences between the two as far as configuration and operation goes. The basic commands are the same, but there are things you will have to "re-learn" with RH that are just done differently.

Ok, I guess I will get redhat for my home computer so I can start learning it, as I hope to move to a dedicated eventually.

Well, I can't say I'm happy about having to reinstall Redhat, but if it will help I guess I can always give it a shot. For some reason, it wasn't as easy to pick up on as Mandrake was for me.
