Right, or you can have someone build it for you. I think surpass gives those prices for a 1u or 2u box that fits in a rack.

Most server chasis come with the network on board, so it's just a matter of building it with the operating system, hard disk, and memory that you want, and any applications you want to run on it. Then you ship the beast down to Florida and they'll install it for you.

Actually, I don't think you even need to load the OS. Just send the hardware. They will load it just like one of their servers.

This actually makes it easier for them to manage if it is running the same software as the other servers in the datacenter.

I believe the above to be completely accurate. However, if someone knows differently, feel free to correct me.

John, this is totally true and correct.

Please let us install the software.

Would you not allow the client to install their own OS?

How would you install it yourself?

You'd have to ask them to install it for you (send the CD or whatever), am i right?

I believe what they're saying is you send in the hardware, they'll build it out like they do any of their servers with Red Hat linux.

I'm also certain, that like any CoLo facility, they will let you send a fully configured server. If you need them to manage it in any way, you'll have to ensure that you provide them access to the operating system (admin account).

I would hope so. Kayla's comment about having them install the software is what made me wonder, though.

You could install it yourself like you would with any other computer.

Or you could install it before you ship them the server.

While they might allow you to use your OS of choice, I would think that the level of support would have to drop to "best effort", and you'd be responsible for patching. If it's running their standard stack of software, it's "just one more" box to take care of. Once you deviate from that, it becomes a "one off" that requires a lot more time and becomes a special case.

As always, open to correction.

John
