why is necessary a domain name?

i am ordering a server right now.., and i am wondering, why is necessary a domain name?

can the domain name be diferent that the ones i use for DNS??

Example

domain name : www.alpha.com

dns : ns1.beta.com
ns2.beta.com

please, help

here is an example

hostname: server1.alpha.com

dns1: ns1.alpha.com
dns2: ns2.alpha.com

when server1 is the name that i put to the server?

Yes server1 would be the hostname in this case

like in pass12.dizinc.com

pass12 would be the hostname
