hi. i have purchased a domain from elsewhere. can i host my files here and use that domain? so in order to do that, what will i need to do? in other words, do i need to tell them that i'm hosting at surpassing or do i have to tell surpass that my domain is elsewhere?
i wanna run a forum. i'm not expecting to reach even 500 users in a year or two. and then again not all of them will be regular. (or use the forum all at once). at what point i should start thinking about dedicated servers? i mean with that kind of expectation, do i really need to spend that much money for a dedicated system? that's why i'm thinking of the oc5 plan. is it a good choice for my intention? any help is appreciated guys. Hello
Depending on how you have your domain registered, you either need to change the nameservers yourself or have them changed for you. You will get these in your welcome mail after your account has been activated. A forum of 500 members a good sized forum, but I don't see how it would need a dedicated server unless a large portion of the users were online at all times. The oc5 plan appears to be a very good choice for it. A friend of mine uses an oc5 account for his forum and it's worked out great for him. Feel free to ask any further questions ![]() |

hey thanks for the instant reply. regarding domains, yes, i have full control of them. so all is needed is a change in nameserver address if i'm not mistaken. that'll simply direct request to surpass right? but i'll still be in control of the domain?
oh and by the way, can you give me the URL of the forum so i can at least have an idea.... thanks! ![]() |

Not a problem. Yep, all you'll have to do is update the nameservers, then wait for it to propagate. Should be 4-48 hours before it's all settled. You'll still have full control of your domain at your domain registry in case you decide to leave in the future (though, I'm sure you'll love Surpass.)
Yep, friends' forum can be reached at http://bobdeveaux.com/index.php (It's not very active in posting, but the arcade is sure active.) Welcome ![]() |

got two more questions.
1) do you guys have daily transfer limit? like some hosts say you have xx GB/ month but there's actually a daily limit like 500MB/day or 1GB/day. ?? does surpass limit like that or its open until i run out of my allocated bandwith? (not that I'm expecting a shortage.... i doubt if i'll reach even 500mb/day. lol. just curious if there's a limit.. ) 2) would it be okay to run a script such as this one? http://www.pancake.org/zina/index.html (to play some sample music only, NO download) Last edited by registered; May 7th, 2005 at 8:17 PM.. |

1) Nope, there's no limits like that. Actually, my friend with the forum I gave the link to was hosting his friend and his friend ended up using like 40 GB in just a couple days. Shouldn't be a problem unless your site is straining the server.
2) For this, it's always tricky to answer yes or no. I'm not firm on the US copyright laws, but I believe even for streaming you have to have consent or a licence. If it's music you or your friends are making, I would be absolutelty fine. Public streaming of copyrighted music is something touchy though. So depending on the content, it's either a yes or no. |

<embarassed> I'm sorry if i'm bugging too much.. You're being very helpful. I appreciate it buddy.
</embarrassed>Nope. I'm talking about foreign music. Music from outside the US (they are non-english as a matter of fact) . So I would assume US laws don't apply to them? |

You have no reason to be sorry, it's not bugging me at all. Surmunity is about people helping people
![]() That's a grey area for me. I'm not sure whether the copyright would hold under US Law or not. I did some brief searches and couldn't clarify it at all. My suggestion would be either take the safe route and get permission/licences or contact someone who knows US copyright laws and can offer some better advice. Support might be able to answer the question too. |
