Hi, I currently use another web host service and will be transferring to Surpass soon. As a relative newbie to web management, I'd really appreciate some advice on when is a good time to switch. My domain name and host service both expire July 16. Should I wait until a few days before expiration, should I initiate it now, or some other time between now and then? Thanks!

Domain propagation typically takes 12-24 hours. Sometimes shorter, sometimes sooner. Unless you're transferring your domain to Surpassdomain, I'd order my account a good 3-4 days before your other account expires (activation typically takes 24 hours). Set everything up on the server like e-mail accounts, FTP, databases etc... Make a back-up on your other server, move the files over to your Surpass server, fix any problems that might be lingering. Then on your remote server, put up a page saying you're in the process of moving servers and it will be up within 72 hours and change your DNS values. It should go fairly transparent with little or no time when your domain isn't accessible at all.

Brian,
Welcome to Surpass! I agree with everything Haugland told you, but he based that on you not transferring your domain as well. If you are going to transfer your domain, either to Surpass or another registrar, you should initiate that at least a month before it expires. You can transfer it first, and your site later. For your site, just listen to Haugland. ![]() I have had domain transfers happen in a week, and have had them take almost 3 weeks. You can't transfer an expired domain, so you don't want it to expire during the transfer process. You'll still get credit for the time remaining on the domain, so you have nothing to lose by transferring it a little early just to be safe (assuming that you are wanting to move your domain name as well). John

quick question in regards to transferring as well.. i was told on another thread that if my current host uses cpanel, i could have my files transferred by surpass and not have to do it myself, correct? because i have honestly never transferred and probably could manage the files but i have no clue how to transfer databases.

That is correct, if your current host supports cPanel then Surpass will be able to transfer all your files/databases without client interaction.
