Domain expired?

I was thinking about transfering my domain over to Surpass, but it has expired already (yesterday). However, when I tried to buy the same domain on Surpassdomains.com, it says that it isn't available.

I checked my domain at whois.com, and it's still under my previous host. Do I have to wait a while before I "renew" the domain here? If so, about how long?

it's probably in a thing called the "redemption period". it's around 30 days. you can usually renew it for an extra fee unless you'd just rather wait until it fully expires and is returned to the domain pool.

Thanks for the fast reply ozzy. So does that mean that I still have time to transfer the domain over to Surpass?

i don't know exactly how that works. i think you would need to renew it at the current registrar, pay the extra fee for the redemption period and then transfer it. that might prove to be quite costly though...

I would register it again at your old registrar, and then transfer it over, instead of taking the chance of it expiring, and one of those ad site places grabbing it up before you can re-register it.

I completely agree. Depending who the domain is with now, there may not even be an extra fee to renew it. Just the normal renewal fee.

I had a client that had problems with register.com and accidently had a domain expire. It was immediately snapped up by a piece of scum that offered to sell it back to her for $3000.

When your domain expires your current registry will usually give you a grace period to renew at the normal registration period. This can be up to 45 days but also much less. After that it will be sent to redemption where only the previous owner can renew it, this is at $80 normally. After the redemption process it goes into deletion status for 5 days. After the deletion process it is released to the public.
Use the status check at freewho.com to check the drop date, when it will go public once it enters redemption.
