Mass email limit?

I was wondering, is there a mass email limit? My current webhost blocked off my email because I sent 1800 emails within a short amount of time (I run a forum and I wanted to update all my members about the forum status).

I believe it's 350 per hour on shared servers. There are ways to avoid that by putting a slight delay between sending out the mails.
