oc plans & traffic handling
Can an oc5 and oc10 plans handle a slashdot (not speaking in general, but having one's site exposed to actual traffic from slashdot.org)?
Thanks-- |

They should be able to depending upon what the topic is, If you think your going to get slashdot'ed i'd recommend a dedicated though because its really easy to go though 100GB if you have the right topic

I'd be more worried about maxing server resources than your bandwidth limits.

removed - clearly, you have no idea what your talking about. on my system the load never went over 1.3 (for non-Unix-geeks, that mean it never came close to breaking a sweat).
Kicker - any where from 2 to 3.5K visitors & about 22K hits with about 200-500 comments on average for being slashdotted see my image it was fetched 27,000 or so times So, why is it that when most sites get "featured" on Slashdot, they crumble? They generally have two fatal flaws: (1) not enough bandwidth, and (2) dynamic content. I was fortunate enough to have some excellent network connectivity, so it handle a lot of traffic. The fact that mysite was serving static files, no PHP or anything fancy, meant that the CPU had time to spare. Running a tail -f against the apache log was quite amusing. It was scrolling really, really fast. --- MAYBE Surpass should test a webserver, and post the results. http://builder.com.com/5100-6371-5171727.html |
