WebDev or OC5 - I'm torn between the two...

I've been looking at surpass as a web host for several weeks now and I like what I see - not perfect, but what host is? It seems I will signup with surpass in the next day or so but I am really torn between the choice of OC5 versus webdev.

I am an experienced programmer and could really take advantage of what webdev offers but probably not immediately, more like in the 6-12 month timeframe. In the immediate timeframe I do need to get a site running for my photography side business and OC5 would be perfect for that.

So, the question: if I start out with OC5 and pay for a year and then decide to move up to webdev, can the remainder of my OC5 fees be applied to webdev?

Also, I understand that webdev accounts are on a separate server to better provide the additional offerings of that account type. Given that the type of person working within a webdev framework is probably more likely to be experimenting with various pieces of s/w, are the webdev servers going to be reliable enough for a site that I'd rather not see suffer the ups and downs of such playing around?

Thanks for any answers in advance!

Welcome to Surpass/Surmunity!

If you want to switch from OC5 to Web Dev, you will be given a prorated refund for the partial year remaining, and billing will start on the Web Dev.

As for your other question, I believe it should be as stable, if not more so, than the other hosting. Just because there are more tools available, I doubt that Surpass is going to let people go nuts. Plus, people who need the Web Dev features probably have a better grip on what they are doing.

John

Failure is not an option. It comes standard with all Microsoft products.

Thanks for the welcome, John! It's great to hear that a jump from oc5 to webdev won't see any of the oc5 year's payment go to waste. Hmm, I may just go directly to webdev anyway - gotta give myself another few hours to decide...

It's probably true what you write above. However, as I've been programming since 1975 I know from repeated personal experience how easily an unintended bug can have unintended consequences. It's just that us nerds cover our tracks faster and better (I hope) :-)

It's only a mistake if someone else finds it first.

Well, the decision has been made and it seems that webdev won out. I will shortly be a new webdev 1 plan user and hopefully the ride will be a smooth one...

Thanks, John, but I am not fully aboard yet, just sort of walking up the gang plank so to speak. I'm just waiting for the crew here to actually activate my account. It is still in pending state. How long does it usually take to get the account running?

Accounts are activated manually to help hold down on fraud. They are activated during business hours. Typically, they will be activated within a day, though that can vary based on workload, someone calling in sick, etc...

You've made a good choice coming to Surpass, so if you do have to wait a day or 2, it will be well worth the wait.

Until then, you can just hang out with us, assuming your sanity isn't that important to you.
