Hello,

In regards to your servers, is it possible for me to use a Surpass Dedicated Server I rent, as my ISP? As in, I wish to connect to my server and use it as a ISP host to browse the internet with. This could also be used to give connections to others and create a small ISP company.

So, possible? And, if so, through what method?

you mean as a proxy server? Like an anonymous proxy? I don't belive those are allowd on shared servers, but you might be able to install one on a dedicated.... I'd wait for a confirmation from Kayla on this though...

ISP is "Internet Service Provider". One who provides Internet Services? In one sense, yes, someone selling hosting and domain registration and so on is an "ISP", it is not the same as someone who provides you with a connection to the internet.

If you are thinking of selling hosting, then yes, you can use your dedicated for that purpose. If you are talking about connecting to the server in order to provide you with an internet connection, then no. You cant

Im going to use a Dial-up system as an example, as its easiest. Your modem phones a phone number and creates a wired connection to a server which then connects you to a backbone of some sort that they have. Now while Cable and DSL services are not absolutely identical, the principal is essentially the same. For ADSL its simply a matter of using the higher frequencies that a telephone line can support. Satellite/Cable, well, its satellite and cable, i dont know enough about the technology to explain it, but my assumption is that it still requires a connection from your satellite or cable box, to a reciever at the other end, either wireless or wired.

So essentially to provide internet connections to someone, you need to set up the server with some sort of reciever, either a modem in the case of dialup, or a cable/satellite reciever for DSL/Cable

Long story short, no, you cant. Not as far as providing that initial connection, only as a proxy server, which means they connect to the internet, then through you for whatever reason, and then to a site they wish to visit. but they can just as easily not go through you lol.
