need pay for static ip?

My domain XYZ is registered thru company A

XYZ is presently hosted at company B

I point DNS at company A to my hosted XYZ at B

So, can I do the same with the basic $6 Power plan? but without a static IP, it will not work with redirection from company A.

That means I have to add on an extra $4 to the $6, which makes it not as competitive as where I am now at Company B at $7.

No, I don't want to move XYZ registration to here. I just want hosting.

Only reason for moving is the IP deny feature here. Gonna stop all those damn bots from crawling my site.

Thank you.

You're over thinking.

At company A, change your NAME SERVERS to be SURPASS (ns109.dizinc.com, or whatever they assign you.). Then all is well with the world.

Keep in mind that denying IP addresses access to your site is just done through a .htaccess file as described here:

Hey THANKS for that tip. I can go test it out on myself. Luckily my isp provides multiple IPs for my one account.

Woo hoo, no more googlebots. Now if somebody knows how I can block the whole of Russia, China, Taiwan, India, etc. Other than com.ru, com.cn etc.

Unfortunately many of these countries don't have neat netblocks of IP addresses, so it's pretty hard to block all visitors of that country. What you can do, however, is block certain language settings in browsers. If you wanted to redirect everyone with their language set to Russina, Chinese, Taiwanese, Indian, etc... you could set something up like the following in your .htaccess file:

Code:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP:Accept-Language} (ru|cn|tw|in) [NC]
RewriteRule .* http://www.google.com [R,L]
That would send them all to Google.com instead.

Attached you'll find a list of IP netblocks for each country that I'd recommend blocking. You can just copy and paste their contents into the .htaccess file. The China.txt file also contains some Taiwanese netblocks.

I really hope you can make use of them because it took me at least an hour to make each one. Seriously.

Otherwise you can take the easy route and block most by doing something like:

Code:
deny from .ru
deny from .cn
deny from .tw
deny from .in
Was there some reason that you didn't want to go that route?

Oh, and I've also uploaded the IP block files to my website in case I ever remove the attachments. You may find them here:

http://www.thewired.tk/misc/russia.txt
http://www.thewired.tk/misc/china.txt
http://www.thewired.tk/misc/india.txt
Attached Files
File Type: txt russia.txt (29.5 KB, 6 views)
File Type: txt china.txt (6.8 KB, 3 views)
File Type: txt india.txt (6.8 KB, 3 views)

Hey thanks again.
Now if there's a simple way to kick everyone out except from US, that would be great!

As to why I didn't think of "deny from .cn" etc. Cause I didn't think of it. But wouldn't that stop for example blahblah.cnet.com? or blah.cnn.com?

btw, obviously with the info re .htaccess that miakeru posted I could stay put where I am and not move here. But I am in the process of downloading my present site and I will move here in the next couple of days.

With user to user support like this, it speaks volumes for the company.

One more question. While the download speed from my present host is more than fine, the upload speed is very lacking. No, it is not my connection. I average 600-800 Kb up to other sites. But to my own site when uploading it is a painful <200 Kb.

You're in luck!

Code:
order allow,deny
deny from all
allow from .com
allow from .net
allow from .org
allow from .us
allow from .mil
allow from .gov
... and anything else I might've missed.

Aha! I misread what you typed.

Nope, it won't block things like CNet as their hostname must end in '.cn' and not just contain it.
