Question Questions about Shared Hosting...

Hello, I'm looking for specifics in a host so please read my post carefully as I'm very discriminative about finding a new host.

1.) Are your access logs daily or monthly? Clarification: One domain gets one log file per MONTH or per DAY?

2.) How many separate servers do you have?

3.) If another customer causes trouble on computer #48 (such as disabling the MYSQL process) would I be able to have my account moved to a different computer then #48?

4.) Are there any file size restrictions on importing MySQL databases and if so what size?

5.) Apache 1.x or 2.x?

6.) No addon domains? (additional domains to be hosted)

7.) Is there a money back guarantee?

8.) In regards to anti-virus protection do you scan every file that is uploaded or is this handled in a different manner? I have 4K+ files some of which are literally measured in dozens of bytes.

9.) Your servers are physically located in Orlando?

Thanks for your time and I hope your answers are clear unlike many other hosts.

I don't work for Surpass so I can't answer some of these questions. Plus, you can find answers to most of these questions on the homepage, but...

1. I'm not sure what you mean, but stats runs are done several times per day. Your bandwidth usage is, I believe, updated 3-4 times per day.

2. I have no idea.

3. If another customer causes trouble on the server, their site gets suspended. Why should Surpass make you suffer for someone else's mistake?

4. Most MySQL databases can be imported via phpMyAdmin. For any that are bigger than what phpMyAdmin will take, the Support department will be happy to import them for you.

5. Apache 1. I haven't seen too many cPanel hosts offer Apache 2 yet.

6. Yes - http://www.surpasshosting.com/hostingplans.php

7. Yes - http://www.surpasshosting.com/content/about/guarantee/

8. I'm not aware of any antivirus stuff running on Surpass servers. Why would they do that -- it is a Linux enviroment after all.

9. Yes.

Ok, let's say you download your access logs for your site. Are they monthly or daily logs? Here is an example of your directory listings for both...

Monthly
2007-01.log
2007-02.log
2007-03.log
2007-04.log
2007-05.log
2007-06.log
(1 log file PER month)

Daily
2007-01-01.log
2007-01-02.log
2007-01-03.log
2007-01-04.log
2007-01-05.log
2007-01-06.log
(1 log file PER day)

Thank you for your reply removed, it was unexpectedly useful considering you're a customer.

You can download daily logs via the "Raw Access Logs" menu in cPanel. But if you want to get a more comprehensive log (i.e. one that goes back as far as possible; when the account was created) you can email support and have them send you the one stored in /usr/local/apache/domlogs
I've never had them do this for me, but I doubt they'd have any problems with it; it's just a copy/paste job via shell.

Ok, please just tell me, how many total separate log files per month? 31 or 1?

When I access the "Raw Access Logs" via CPanel, it offers me one per day per subdomain, in downloadable .gz format. Hope that helps.

Thank you for your help Carolyn.

JAB - did you have any other questions? I noticed that you signed up in 2004 but did not post until now.

JAB, there are also many more options for viewing access to your site, many are extremely customizable. You do not need to rely on logs in cPanel for everything.

I'm not sure why I registered in 2004.

A friend is working on a compiler for hosts plagued with daily logs in contrast to the normal monthly logs so once this is completed it will represent only a moderate inconvenience.

I use logs to develop a much more detailed version of AWStats.
