Question [Answered] Complete novice needs hosting gurus help!

Hi,

All the stuff on your forums looks a bit technical to me as I am a first timer - so bear with me...

I've just bought a domain name from 123-reg.co.uk and need somewhere to host it - your $1 is looking pretty fantastic at the mo!

So Q's:
1. can I transfer that name for free?
2. Can I have my site as www.mysitesname.co.uk or will it be www.mysitesname.surmunity.co.uk?
3. I havent built a site to transfer - just bought the name. So how would I go about building a site? Is there anything else I must purchase beforehand to do this?
4. I do have a web page creator on disc somewhere - so I mock up my page on this - how do I get it on to my 'site'?
5. Can I put links in and more than 1 page? How?

I know these are super simple questions to most of you, so if anyone could help I'd really appreciate it!

As I say its my first time, so please be gentle and not use too much techie lingo...

Thank you in advance,
Newbie Kelly

You don't have to transfer, just point your domain to the Surpass name servers, you get this info in your welcome letter. You current registrar 123-reg.co.uk should be able to help you do that.

2. Can I have my site as www.mysitesname.co.uk or will it be www.mysitesname.surmunity.co.uk?

It will be www.mysitename.co.uk

3. I havent built a site to transfer - just bought the name. So how would I go about building a site? Is there anything else I must purchase beforehand to do this?

The Fantastico applet on the cPanel has lots of neat installs for blogs, wikis, storefronts, polls, etc. You could use your own software, or you could use free software in Fantastico.

4. I do have a web page creator on disc somewhere - so I mock up my page on this - how do I get it on to my 'site'?

FTP - Get an FTP client and upload. Very easy and free. Your website creator may even have a built in FTP client . OR, there is web based upload through the cPanel as well.

5. Can I put links in and more than 1 page? How?

Yes, of course. Your site can be as simple of as complicated as you like.

Hope you join up. Lots of good help around here too....

Kel,

Since you have to *dig out* the web builder software, you could get *up to date* by downloading nVu.

It works on windows or linux, has editing buttons similar to writing these posts, and like Puck mentioned about publishing, you do File > Publish [enter you site name, user name and password] so when you change a page --- it's magic.
Also don't forget that the first/main page has to be named index.htm [or html] and from there they can be anything like news/pictures with .htm on the end.
