Movable Type Questions

Hello! I've heard fabulous things about Surpass Hosting, but before making the switch I had some questions specific to Movable Type.

I saw some posts about MT causing server problems, but I also notice the most recent of those posts (that I saw) was from 2005; has this been resolved? I have the most recent version of MT and have never had a problem. I just want to know if anyone's had recent problems with up-to-date installations of MT. Thank you!

The main issue with MT has been the comment scripts...

They can get spammed very easily and having cgi in the mix can really cause harm to a shared server. As long as you have tools installed to curb spam - you should be fine!

There are tools to curb the spam? Hallelujah. I have the latest installation, which junks them, but I've had trouble blocking them completely. Are there special added plug-ins for this, or are we just talking about the latest version?

Also - I'm assuming that Surpass has all the updated perl, mysql, etc, to run the latest installation of MT?

Sorry for any confusion, I personally do not know much about Movable Type. I just know what MT does to our servers. You will need to make sure that your comments are under control using whatever methods are available from MT or third party developers.

Our servers will run MT fine.

Oh, yargh - so MT is still causing problems? I thought based on the dated comments that they'd fixed their stuff. We're thinking about cutting off comments altogether because of the spam and going with forums anyway - you guys have forums we can install to the site, right? Are there huge spam problems with forums as well?

BTW, thanks for the quick responses. I really appreciate it.

To be honest, lately it's Greymatter with lots and lots of spam. I haven't really saw any MT problems in the past few months, maybe it's because MT users are more careful with their sites.

As for forums, use them freely!

We recommend punBB the most - it's really fast and customizes well with any site design, it's really clean.

Hello,

You do have a selection to choose from when it comes to web applications, and free ones as well! Each cPanel (control panel available to all shared and reseller people, as well as VPS and webdev, I believe) comes with a free Fantastico license. This is a automative installer which supports many popular scripts for many different needs. Also, no worries on the MySQL database usage in terms of howm many, you can host unmetered databases (only space and connections "at a time" are your limit).

So, in the list, these are the forums you can install:

Discussion Boards:
Invision Board (Disabled) (website)
phpBB2 (2.0.22) (website)
SMF (1.1.1) (website)
YaBBSE (Disabled) (website)

So, that's phpBB2 and SMF to choose from (they gotta add more ). I'd recommend SMF personally.

EDIT: Or you can use...

Which is very nice as well.
