Smooth domain transfer

Okay, preparing for the switch. Here's my issue - I'd really like to have all my files on the website and ready to go when I switch. I've got three websites, which I use professionally, so I'd like the downtime to be minimal. I have Movable Type installations and two years worth of archives to transfer.

Since I'll be handling my own nameservers, all I have to do is sign up with you, upload all my material, check it with the IP address you assign to make sure it's all working, and then transfer my DNS, right? Is there any other advice y'all might have for making this as smooth as possible? One of my blogsites gets thousands of visitors a day, with Sunday being the light day, so I think I'll try to transfer then, which means all day Saturday dedicated to this, if I sign up tomorrow. Any advice on a smooth transition would be appreciated. Thanks so much! I'm impressed already with the responsive forums!

Hello,

I'll give some insight.

In the transfer of locations, how smooth is how you make it. Since these are blog sites, this shouldn't be too much of a pain. Here's my advice when you're ready to move.

+ Disable commenting and place a note of "currently moving to another server" or so, on the blogs. This will help your visiters understand to wait until the switch is final.
+ Begin the move by either yourself or (FREE!) by the Surpass Tech Staff. I recommend having the Surpass staff move this for you, as then you do not have to worry about the hassle of making full backups, etc.
+ Once the site is in the process of being transfered, you will want to change your DNS settings. Remember, DNS changes could take up until 72 hours for EVERYONE to be repointed ot the new server. Though you may see this change instantly, someone in another country may not and thus still be looking at the old account.
+ Be sure to delete the "Currently Moving" post (or so) from the blogs and enable commenting again ON THE NEW ACCOUNT. This is a good way for a confirmation as well.

I hope that could help. Be sure to cancel your old hosting account to avoid unnecessary billing, BUT ONLY AFTER YOUR FILES ARE MOVED. Otherwise you'll lose your files : /

Wait - the Surpass staff will move me? For free? Are you kidding?

OMG. I love you people. Seriously.

Thanks for the notes! I understand the DNS thing, and have all my domains ready to switch as soon as the files are transferred.

Wow. The Surpass staff will move me. Really?

At request via Support Divison in https://desk.surpasshosting.com, the staff will move all files and cPanel configurations. I forgot to mention, your old host must have provided cPanel to you in order to do this for free. Sorry I forgot : / shame shame on me...

And, reading your title, you wish to transfer your domains too? Or just site (and update the nameservers only)?

The old place used cPanel. Yay!

The plan is to transfer the files first, then switch the nameservers myself once it's all set.

Thanks again, so much!
