Chat rooms?

When reading the TOS I found this:
Surpass Hosting does not provide nor allow chat rooms on shared hosting environments. You may elect for a dedicated server to run a chat room efficiently.

Does this include PHP chatrooms as well, it would seem so because there is a clause about IRC servers directly below it.

You aren't allowed any chatrooms. PHP, Perl, Ruby, etc. Unless you get a dedicated or VPS.

I guess so. As long as the other server allows it.

right, you are not allowed to host a chatroom on surpasses servers, not that you are not allowed to have a chatroom as part of your service/site, such as on a free irc host (most networks will allow you to create a room, some may prefer that the room be focused on a similar subject/topic as the network (eg, you wouldnt host #malibubarbie on a linux focused network? lol))

Im not sure how they feel about portals that allow access to chat servers, such as cgi irc clients that are commonly available, although i suspect they frown upon it

JavaIRC is perfectly fine so long as it's connecting to an external IRC server. I'm not sure about CGI though... I'm not sure if it's like Java and doesn't poll your server.

ya the java client is ultimately a client side application, so you/your browser is doing all the work. With CGI there is overhead on the server. it may depend on how its coded, but ive noticed some significant issues with scripts like nph-proxy, however i do have a few people using CGI irc scripts that dont seem to cause any major issues, but they arent used that much. the client base for those sites tend to have their own irc clients anyways lol

So ya, there will be some server resources dedicated to every user, although honestly not positive if its a one time it, or a constant hit, but i suspect it to be the latter.
