Dear pete,
We do not allow ffmpeg on shared hosting servers because of the strain it will place on the server. If you need ffmpeg for streaming we would suggest a dedicated environment.

yeah, no shazbat! ffmpeg can bring a desktop PC to it's knees... no way I'd want it on a shared server environment!

I disagree with bringing it to its knees... I've used it many times with hardly any noticeable impact on normal computer usage. Nonetheless, it would impact performance on a busy server... especially if more than one user was using it. Any setup that wants to succeed will have all video files processed on a server dedicated to video conversion.
