Question Mailing list limits?

Hi all, I have what I think is an easy question. Our neighborhood civic association has a simple website and a mailing list of about 280 members on another host (I inherited this mess about a year ago.)

We have fairly regular problems with our host over the size of this list -- sending a message exceeds our current host's 100 email messages per hour limit. In the past we've been able to get this lifted, but this is the 3rd or 4th time this has happened and now they are telling us we need to get a dedicated server. This is way out of our budget -- we send maybe 20-30 emails a YEAR on this list, but when we do send them, we need it to go to 300 people.

So, I have 2 questions:

1) Are there similar mails/per/hour limitations? (And do those limitations apply to mailing lists?)

2) Is there a limit on the number of lists? We have 2 (the 2nd is only about 30 people, but is higher traffic, maybe 20-30 messages a month.)

Thanks,

Joe

I believe the limits on emails are 300 per hour on shared hosting.

A dedicated server would always be best if you can afford it. Surpass has some really good prices. You can also consider VPS, where you get a big chunk of the server, and I don't think there is a mailing limit.

Here's a suggestion from an economic standpoint... why not go with a free group mailing list like Yahoo Groups or Google Groups? It would seem that for 2 to 3 emails a month, you could use a free service. They are easy to administer, and you could make them announcement only.

Just my $.02 .

We have considered that route (we used to have a Yahoo group, but they had a number of email issues so we moved -- ha). I'll check out Google again.

I did find out something about phpList. You can configure it to meet the 300/hour limits.

http://docs.phplist.com/PhpListConfigSendRate

And you can do an easy install from Fantastico.

So, you can keep your shared hosting plan, and stay within the 300/hour limits.
