[Answered] Surpass - VBulletin & Joomla friendly?

Hi guys,

You've been recommended to me by one of your current customers, and i'm thinking of joining you due to persistent problems with my current host.

My site uses the VBulletin forum pacagem and also the Joomla CMS.

Do Surpass have any objections to these being used? I know some hosts don't like Vbulletin being used - although I find it odd why, as its posisbly the most common forum software out there.

Thanks for your help

No we do not have a problem. As you may or may not have noticed Surmunity runs on VBulletin and Joomla is downloadable from Fantastico within the Surpass Cpanel. =)

Some hosts think that vBulletin uses more processing power than other forums. Really I think it depends on how many users you have.. if you have a large number of members any forum software may begin to slow down.

Please let us know if you have any other questions! We're always looking forward to new faces here on the forum.

Thanks Kayla! The only thing i'm worried about now is this:

Quote:
* Memory usage may not exceed 10% per domain/file/application
* CPU usage may not exceed 20% per domain/file/application
* Apache connections may not exceed 30 connections
* 15 MySQL maximum user connections allowed
* 350 emails per hour, per domain
I'm not too clued up on the technical jargon - could you clarify how may forums users that would allow on the site at one time please? I'm not too sure what 30 apache connections and 15 MySql user connections means - does that mean only 30 or 15 users can access my forum at one time?

Also, how do I find out how much CPU usage my website takes up?

Sorry if I sound a dumbass - I just want to make sure that everything is right for me before I move over to a new host. The last thing I want is to move my site over, only to have it suspended after a few weeks/months because its put too much strain on the server.

Thanks Kayla

One you do not sound like a "dummy". These are perfectly honest questions. For your first question, no that does not mean the number of users who can view your forum, but the number of users you create to a database within MySQL, which has nothing to do with your viewers. All that has to do is with the script.

Second question, I'm not quite sure how you are able to check your CPU usage, you'll have to wait until someone who does know (Kayla) so they can tell you.

Unless you have root WHM access you'll have to ask your host what your average CPU usage is

trying to get that kind of info out of my current host will be like trying to get blood out of a stone. They're very unhelpful and useless - hence why I want to leave them

They can't even set up a new MySql database for me without any problems, so asking them something like this will probably give them a heart attack

No. It means who can HIT the thing simultaneously. Web servers are connection / session based. So 30 apache connections means, at ONE TIME (ie this very second) people are requesting data / pages from the site. 15 MYSQL connections means the forum or other applicatiion can request different data lookups at the same time. Most people who have less than 1000 hits per day will never get close...
