Php Motion

Do you satisfy the requirements of hosting a site using the php motion script? The requirements are:

- PHP 4.3 and above (including support of CLI)
- MySQL database server
- LAME MP3 Encoder
- Libogg + Libvorbis
- Mencoder and also Mplayer
- FFMpeg-PHP
- GD Library 2 or higher
- CGI-BIN
- Be able to run background processes
- open_basedir = (no value)
- upload_max_filesize = 100M
- post_max_size = 100M
- max_execution_time = 1500
- session.gc_maxlifetime = 14000
- safe_mode = off
- Thread saftery = disabled
- enable_dl = On

It will be a completely new site and I would like to started small and upgrade as needed. Is it supported?

I don't think they have LAME, libogg, ffmpeg-php or libvorbis on shared servers. If you get a VPS or Dedicated, I believe you can. If you need shared hosting and want that stuff, there's a few shared hosts that allow you to set it up, but if the site starts hogging resources, then the site will be suspended and it will be suggested it be moved to a VPS or Dedicated server.

I see staff on and have answered a few other questions but I guess no one has a definitive answer on this. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you'll be told to go dedicated. The shared plans don't support it (the php motion sites says "ffmpeg, mencoder, flvtool2" etc needs to be installed which would really bog down a shared server). You can try VPS, but once you start getting more and more users, you'll most likely have to switch to a dedicated. If you really want to start on a shared host, there are a few out there, but you'll either be paying a lot, or experiencing problems.

Just as Twirp said, encoding or compressing videos via background task doesn't really have its place in a shared environment. You will probably need to go VPS or dedicated. You might find a host that accept those requirements. Yet, as soon as your site become somewhat active, they will ask you to move to a VPS or dedicated.

You can find a list of shared host that supports phpMotion in their forums. You will see that some host ask for 50$ per month for flash hosting. That's basically a dedicated server.

If you just want to get a separate host for streaming videos on another hosting company cirtex has some good plans that include ffmpeg scripts like phpmotion and vshare

One thing I would be careful about is hosts that offer cheap deals for such features tend to pile many on a shared server which is fine if they are all low performance, but will cause issues if one or two of those sites get slightly popular.

Imagine if you allow a user to upload 50mb, it's converted to .flv (FFMPEG) if needed, meta stuck into them (flvtool2), it will most likely be compressed to to some degree. now imagine if just 10 people saw that a day or embeded on their own site.

Lets also imagine a smaller file size 5mb, 10 sites embed it, 10 people on each site view it, thats 500 mb bandwidth for one video.

My point being is how could these cheap deals be sustained, personally I would imagine many hosts over selling and relying on the low usage of most people.

If you still serious, then PHPMotion is cool, but there are other options:

OSTube - English and German - Willkommen bei osTube! | osTube - Open Source Audio-Video-Community-Portal - osTube dein kostenloses Video-Portal - Free community version

Vididcript - Free Youtube Clone - Video Sharing Script PHP - Free Video Upload Script - can't remember licence.

Projekktor - projekktor - simply mighty webTV - This is like a full flash TV platform, a little like JOOST and other tools, but all on-line - Creative Commons

Clip Bucket - ClipBucket a Unique Youtuebe Metacafe Veoh Clone For Video Sharing Website - All open source

Personally I'd go for CMS version, then you can add forums, and other cool stuff easily:

Joomla:

HWD Video Share - Highwood Design Joomla Open Source Components - Home - GPL but costs £10.99 for a year subscription for some cool features.

Seyret - Joomlaholic - Home - GPL with a really cool commercial version in addition to the free version.

I just wish to add in case someone jumps on it. GPL is “free” as in “free speech”, not as in “free beer” - The GNU Operating System

There are also solutions on other CMS's that don't require those extra software installs, but uploads are not converted.

Back to the hosting, if your testing the water and can get a shared host then fine, perhaps even a VPS, but if your serious about this and want to acheive something then a dedicated server is where to start. It would also be good to find a company who can assist in load balancing also. You may not need load balancing now, but if your site is a success like you wish it to be, then you'll need it soon, better to have the option that not.

So far I've found the people at Surpass very accommodating and helpful, I'm not even a customer yet.

Hope this is of some help to someone, I know this post was earlier on in the year, but it may help some other soul in the future.
