Want to migrate but, do I need a dedicated server?

Hi all,
I am an 'having problems' customer of another hosting company.
Here is a short brief of my site history.

Started with a shared hosting on an a very small hosting company.

Site grows over 10 gb traffic/month and I started to have problems so I moved on to another shared hosting on an international and famous company.

All went well until I started to have around 80 gb traffic so I
Moved on to virtual dedicated server with cpanel and 256mb Ram. I had imediatly upgrade it to 512mb because he could not handle more than 100 user online.

All went well for two months or so. Now vps is acting strangly. Some times I have a low cpu load with 150 users online (1.0-3.0 on a quad) and some other time it peaks over 30-40 until it crashes. I have spent my last weeks rebooting the server and sending help tickets.

I´m of sick of it. One day all goes fine, the other day server goes crazy.

At this moment I have aroun 150Gb traffic /month. I use xoops cms so It is database intensive. Around 50 queries/page. Some times I have 250 users online.

So my question is (I´m a newbie on this) :

Wouldn't a Vps take care of this single site?
Do I need to go dedicated?
If so, would a celeron handle this database number of queries?

If I need suport will you say more than:" Everything looks fine here, please review your queries and optimize your code."?

Thanks!

Ps: Surpass was recommended by some xoops users. I also know surpass hosts xoops.org and xoops.org activity is prety like my site so, what is xoops hosting plan here? Maybe I could have the same configuration.

my personal experience with that many people online, you would need a dedicated server. Maybe a VPS with 1GB of guaranteed RAM would work but you would be better off going dedicated. VPS are still shared to some extent as I have always been told and understand.

As for the celeron, I am sure it is your cheapest solution but I would look at a more expensive server.

If I am wrong with my assumption, someone please correct me

A dedicated server is almost certainly going to be needed for this kind of site. VPS accounts are generally not recommended for sites that exceed resource usage limitations -- a dedicated server will usually give you more performance for every dollar spent. We try to market VPS accounts toward customers who need full root access for custom modules and scripts, and not resource intensive sites.

With that in mind, here's what I would recommend for this kind of site:
- Dual Core CPU (cheapest should be OK)
- 2GB RAM
- Dual hard disks with backups enabled

We can't tell you exactly what configuration the Xoops site is hosted on, but I will say that the hardware is similar to what I've recommended right here.

Hi kayla, I´ve heard of you (only good things, eheh).
Well, I still have a blank page in both firefox/internet
The page is this
https://decc.surpasshosting.com/purchase/login/

I select single processor multi core series, 2gb memory, hard drive 2 80gb, cpanel, configserver security and firewal, personal data and... blank page.
Behavior is the same even if I enter no personal data at all.

No errors shown.

Are you using any type of personal firewall or internet security suite such as Norton Internet Security?

I see where it happened:

217.129.*.140 - - [27/Jun/2008:16:46:00 -0400] "POST /purchase/login/ HTTP/1.1" 200 -
217.129.*.140 - - [27/Jun/2008:16:47:39 -0400] "GET /purchase/login/ HTTP/1.1" 200 24660

But I am unable to determine why it is happening. The only thing that happens when you make a post to that page is sanity checks, db input, and then a 302 redirect. It looks like something with your browser is not liking the redirect, which is odd because it happened 3 times in the order process before you got to that point.

Please submit a ticket with your personal information, what server and features you want, and we will manually create the order and invoice for you. I apologize for the trouble
