Bursting?

Hi,

I'm considering signing up for the basic shared plan that's 60 bucks a year. There is ample bandwidth and storage provided there, so I think it'll be fine for me. The question is, can Surpass withstand bursts of traffic? For example, if my site is Dugg, can it stay up? I know some of the more prominent companies such as MediaTemple and Dreamhost claim that no matter what, one's site will stay up and they simply allow bursts to one's account. Does Surpass do something similar? Or do you guys simply let one's site go down? This is important for me, because I'm getting into new media and web 2.0, but I really don't have that large of a budget to pay 20 a month for MediaTemple.

Thanks!

Majicman,

We allow any site on any of our shared servers to "burst" as needed provided they don't sustain enough resource hogging per the TOS Resource Abuse Policies by Surpass Hosting I can understand your budget however you have to compromise as we aren't going to let one account hurt other customers in the server. Just like you wouldn't want to be down or slow because someone else on the server is getting a lot of traffic and doesn't want to pay for their own dedicated server.

Thanks for the response. I understand what you're saying, and I'm not saying that I'm cheap. What I'm saying is that I have no need for a dedicated, and I don't need anymore storage/normal bandwidth than the basic shared hosting provides. What I'm asking is, if my site hits the front page of Digg or Slashdot, how does Surpass handle that sort of thing? I'm pretty sure Surpass doesn't run a "cloud" or cluster sort of system where a site will stay up even during a burst, correct? Here's my main point. For twenty dollars a month, which is a bit steep, but the guaranteed uptime would be worth it, a competitor will guarantee my site stays up during a burst of traffic. Can Surpass guarantee that? I'd really like to host here, but I'm worried about this. When you say, "As long as they don't sustain..." how long is that? Usually Digg spikes don't last too, too long. Again, I'd love to host here, I just need a tad more information.

Our servers are running 8 cpu's 6GB-8GB ram and are able to sustain a lot of traffic at any given time, when cloud's are running 4-5 single cpu or dual cpu servers it is essentially the same as one of our servers. We can not and will not guarantee anything and anyone who does it is simple marketing because there can be a site which can take their system down. However they know it will be 1 in 1,000 maybe and to them it is worth that marketing. We are realistic.

I can't speak in terms of Digg or Slashdot but StumbleUpon has spiked my site and the sites of some of my users before without issues. I'm sure the floods are larger from Digg or /. but I've seen sites go from ~5 to >100 users in 5 minutes due to StumbleUpon before, and not had any issues with "prolonged resource usage".

Thanks for the true and honest response. I'm fairly certain you've just earned my business.

What kind of site are you going to be running? If it's going to use wordpress, make sure to use wp-super-cache. That way if you are dugg, your site won't cause the server to go slow for other users from cpu usage.

Thanks. I plan on it.

Now that I'm home and planning on ordering soon, I have one last question. What sort of webmail does Surpass have? Is it just the standard cPanel webmail?

I know you get horde and roundcube (the cPanel default). Don't know if there's a third anymore.
