The downfall to setting up a redirection is that you'll never have statistics generated for the site. I've ran into the same issue and created a support ticket. You'll need add an A record as mentioned previously. You'll also need to contact support as they'll have to set it up for you unless you specified when created the account that sub.domainname.com would be pointing to it.

I can modify DNS settings and A-records. So.......

Can I host a sub-domain site without hosting the main site? It haven't seen an authoritative answer from someone who works for Surpass Hosting. And if the answer is YES, how do I set up the account?

I just read a message that sub-domains hosted on Surpass Hosting with a URL like http://subdomain.domain.com/ get resolved to http://www.domain.com/subdomain/ If this is true, then what I want will not be possible.

So how about an official answer? Thanks!

Well, official answer coming your way.

Yes, this can be done, since you have the necessary access to your DNS settings. What you need to do is signup for an account and use the TLD as the domain you want hosted. Because the DNS still points to your other servers, that main domain will never resolve to our server.

Then, once that is done, all you need to do is create the subdomains under your account with us, and set the A records to point to the server IP we give you after signup.

Won't that affect mail delivery from the Surpass server to the main domain server, unless the Surpass server's A and MX records are changed to point to the main server?

Yes, if he is using the subdomains email, we will have to change the MX entry on our server and do a couple of other things to get it to deliver to his other server.

Subdomain e-mail is not an issue and won't be used. Everything that was stated above now makes sense. But what about what I read about sub-domains hosted on Surpass Hosting with a URL like http://subdomain.domain.com/ getting resolved to http://www.domain.com/subdomain/ ? Does this occur in the browser address bar for visitors, or do they continue to see http://subdomain.domain.com/

?

And while I'm asking, is it possible to do the complete opposite of my original question? Can I host www.mydomain.com here, but host subdomain.mydomain.com elsewhere if I am using your DNS server and default primary and secondary nameserver info set with my registrar?

Thanks for the replies!

they see the subdomain reference.

part 2 would be up to the other host, because they'd have to put the A record in their DNS...

Why not just host it all here?

I guess I didn't explain myself well. I am setting up an online gaming clan website here at Surpass Hosting. It would be nice to be able to have subdomains that resolve to our game and voice servers IPs. It's a little easier to remember and give out (sub)domain names rather than raw IP addresses usually used by online gamers. I see on http://www.surpasshosting.com/?x=hostingplans that all plans come with "Domain Name control at SurpassDomains.com" but I have yet to figure that out. If I can set additional A records free of charge here, that would be ideal.

The original question was regarding another web project. The company I'm working for has an existing webserver, mailserver, and people who maintain that. I am completely separate from them. I need to setup an affiliated site (geared to a small developer community) and I'd rather use a subdomain of our branded name, rather than get a separate domain name. Make sense?
