Can you host sub-domain sites without hosting the main www.xyz site?
Hi:
I'd like to know if it's possible, and if so how to set up a new hosting account to host a website with a domain name of www2.myhostname.com or developer.myhostname.com. What I'm interested in is hosting one or more subdomain websites but not the main www.myhostname.com site. The top-level website and mail hosting for that domain is hosted elsewhere and cannot change. Because of this, I can't change the main DNS settings to point to your DNS servers. My knowledge of DNS settings is somewhat sketchy, but I believe I can set up specific sub-domain DNS settings with my registrar/DNS host to point to a new surpasshosting.com IP. Does this make sense? How do I proceed and be assured that what I want can be done? Thanks! - Mike |

So, to confirm and make sure I am understanding you clearly: You are wanting to host a subdomain (such as, sub.domain.com) on Surpass Hosting without actually hosting the main domain (domain.com)?
It may be possible thru the registrar of your domain, but I highly doubt that CPanel (the control panel used in the shared hosting and reseller hosting plans) would be able to support this. Please wait for someone else who may have more knowledge of this to reply. Thank you for your interest in Surpass Hosting -- the best hosting company that ever came to existance! |

Yes, that is correct. As I said, I believe I can setup specific subdomains IPs with the current DNS host, but something more would need to be done on the Surpass Hosting end to make things work correctly.

For this specific question, I would suggest e-mailing support
surpasshosting.com. Although you are not a member of Surpass Hosting yet, they would be able to answer this question for you much better than I would be able to, and average response times for e-mails submitted to support is around 45 minutes, so it shouldn't be long until someone answers you. In the e-mail, be sure to indicate that you are not yet a customer; it would also be easier if you used my example in the e-mail you send them so that they know what exactly it is that you are asking. Good luck! |

Thanks for your concern Steve. But I'm in no rush to set up anything today so I'll wait for a reply here. And a pubic forum answer from someone who knows what they're talking about will be helpful to others in the future.

Sure it can be done! You must be able to add an A record to your DNS for the subdomain. If you can't, your most likely out of luck. If your current host doesn't allow you to either change your records yourself or make the changes for you upon your request, I'd jump ship. As long as you have access to your domain's registrar, you can move that domain to any server you like.
Not being an employee or representative of Surpass though, I can't say what their policy may be, but I don't see a reason why they wouldn't allow subdomains as long as they are legitimate. Their automated signup may not allow for this, but they could either set it up manually or they may have you signup with your domain name and then change it to the subdomain later. |

As FW indicates, you can - IF you can modify DNS records at the main site.
If you cannot, then the answer is NO. It's not typically done this way, but some times I've seen a main site where the forums were actually located on another server.... and that's basically what you're trying to do - move part of a site to another server. John

What about setting up subdomains on your current system then simply setting up a redirect to a site hosted on surpass?
