Well, you can write your own shopping cart... or you can find a script somewhere out there.

What I do is pretty cave-man. (it's not on my site yet but it will work like this)- user selects a package, the link takes them to a form. They fill in the form, telling if they want to pay by check or paypal. The form saves them to mysql and notifies me via email. If they're paying by check I welcome them and tell them that their account will be set up when I get the check. If they want to pay by paypal I log in to paypal and send them a request for money for the amount.

Then I set up the account in WHM using the defined package that they want.

When I get the Paypal confirm that they've sent the money, I attach the account information and reply to them.

John

The BEST thing you can ever do is start with the same program from the beginning. Have everything in one place.

eNom would be my choice for domains, and to sell them on your site, I recommend www.dramsystem.com

http://www.surpasshelp.com/resellers has the WHM tutorial for setting up an account.

there are a couple of shopping carts in Scripta, oscommerce and agoracart. Both seem pretty idiot proof, which is what I need, so if you have very little experience with this stuff, go have a play.

If your clients are going to be just your friends and family to start with, do what I'm doing. Get them to set up a monthly payment to your bank account. It's easy for them and costs you very little, ie the fee that the bank charges for a transaction. Easy enoungh to keep track of with a calander and notebook too. When you get some more experience and are ready to go big, get the shopping cart or WHMAP.

It's easy to try to learn everything in the same 2 days to get it all set up, but the learning curve is steep and you make want to crank it back just a little till you get used to everything.

Remember that it's all very well to offer the hosting services, but you also need to do a fair bit of follow-up on peoples problems, so you need to know control panel really well first.

Good luck with it all ...........

see teq you have a point as well because thats what I was thinking I want to start out with the same program from the begining to cause less confusion... also i want something that will instantly set up and e-mail my clients info...

I'm not exactly sure how I will sell a domain through a regular shopping cart?? How would a client go about searching to see if its taken and registering it through any old shopping cart??

What is dramsystem is that another version of WHM AP or is that something seperate of WHM that I have to get too??

btw what is the average support response time for surpass? I submited a ticket a while ago I'm just wondering.

If you had to have a SSL Security Certificate in you or your clients name (sometimes they want that) then it has to be connected to a dedicated IP. Or if you wanted to use your IP as an address instead of www.domainname.com you would need a dedicated IP. Since there are a limited number of IP's and they do cost to own, it makes sense to not use them if you don't need them. In almost all situations, a shared IP works just fine.

also its been brought to my attention that you guys don't offer overselling? so how do people here split up their packages? I just did the math for 50 megabites of space but I'm not sure if 500 megabites of bandwidth would be enough for some people?
I usually make packages that fit most clients and customize a package for the special ones. Space and bandwidth is so inexpensive here that you can grow as needed and charge your customers accordingly.

I was reading over all this, and I think Surpass is the only choice for your needs.

Can we call this a done deal? :stereo:

Teq,

I'm noticing many common questions in this and other threads that are answered with "it's on this page" or "at this location". To me, this is saying that although the info might be availabe, it is not easy to recognize and/or find. I have had quite a difficulty finding info before and ended up resorting to Surmunity and a trouble ticket to get the answers that really should be readily available.

I think that the Surpass websites are in need of a remodel to better organize the layout - from the customer's point of view. Potential, new and existing customers are the ones needing the information. Yes, some answers should be obvious, but if they were people wouldn't be asking the questions - and tech's wouldn't have to keep taking the time to answer them.

My 2.7 cents.

Hey! I turned 100 with this post - cake and ice cream all around!
