Few questions: Message boards and Subdomains
1. Message Boards
What is a good hosting package that can handle a busy message board. Something like Vortexmb.com or Punkdmb.com -- where there are about 30 members browsing the boards at one time, and about 300 members who visit in one day. 2. Subdomains [EDITTED] I want my subdomains to show up as sub.domain.com in the address bar, NOT forward to domain.com/sub -- Is that a feature of the host, or a feature of the domain registrar? Thank you ![]() |

I'm not sure exactly what hosting package you would want but if you plan to grow most likely semi-dedicated or dedicated.
And the subdomains to show up as subdomain.yoursite.com The folder you upload to would be at yoursite.com/subdomain as they are the same thing but you would type it into the address box like subdoamin.yoursite.com as long as you have it setup in your cPanel. Hopefully that didn't sound confusing but I'm sure it did. Basically yes it shows up the way you want it too. If you don't plan on many more members you may be able to go Shared but the people on the server with you may not like it. I'm sure someone else will be able to answer this question better. |

Beldin pretty much answered your questions. A forum with 30 members online at a time is a toss up. Your safe route would be to go to at least semi-dedicated (fewer accounts on a server = more system resources for you) Even then if your forums really pick up you might want to move up to a dedicated... You can try shared but you risk being a 'bad neighbour'.
With the subdomains, they are easy to set up in your control panel. You can have it link to anything on your site. For example: http://sub.domain.com could link to http://domain.com/me/you/files/site.html it is all pretty much step by step in cpanel. You will really love surpass! :reddance:

okay thanks guys.
i was looking at resellers because they're a bit cheaper than semi/dedicated servers. i was wondering if that would work as well. i have the subdomain dolce.caribbea.us which works, but it ends up changing to caribbea.us/dolce in the address bar -- i just didn't know if that was a host thing, which i'm starting to think it is. ps. caribbea is not with surpass. |

Reseller would not work. You basically get your site like shared then all the others is to divy(sp?) out to customers. You cannot add up all the bandwidth and space and apply it to one account. At least I don't think so. You may want to wait for an admin to answer on going shared or email sales
surpasshosting.com and ask them what they think. |

Yeah a reseller account would be perfect if you were going to say, give a site with space and bandwidth limits to some of your friends, host several of your own websites, or sell it to customers.
It is still in a shared environment (I'm not 100% sure how many accounts are on a reseller server) only this time you would be sharing it with a bunch of other resellers (people that can divide up the space to others as you can). Its like living in an appartment. You can have lots of people over as long as your quiet. If you start being loud and making noise then other people are going to start to complain and you could get into trouble. A dedicated (or semi dedicated) is almost like having your own house. You can have a large house party and really don't have to worry about anything and have a lot more flexability. Thats a pretty lame example but its an easy way of looking at it...

No that's a great example. I wish I had enough money to have a "house party". But I guess I would need "guests" before I could do that.
Paris I say go Shared but get something like the Max account or close to it and see what happens. |
