Some questions to help me decide :)

Hi,

I would like to ask you some questions before I make my decision . I'm interested in your "Pro" package.

First to say, it is wonderfull that you have this forum, as one can see the very same moment user comments and make some conclusions. Only good providers can do so.

At the moment I have very good and reliable host, but they do not have any plan over 300MB space (I am at 150MB now), and the moment came that I need some more. So, my aim was to find the same good and reliable host, which I hope you are, at least from all comments that I read here.

I'd like to ask you the following:

1) My host (atm) told me that I just need to send them fax with your DNS data and they would change it. And they say that from the moment this change is made, I have this domain registered by you. Is it so? Do I than pay you for this domain or to whom?
(They would make change of DNS data that I send them by fax (they'll put your DNS data), and they would have nothing to do with that domain name from that moment. My 2 domains are registered for me at "psi-usa", and I am not sure what would be written at Technical part - [tech-c] and [zone-c] data - those are supposed to be your data, isn't it?)

I am so afraid of this move & some downtimes that my page could have . Please tell me it is not so bad as I think .

2) How many connections to DB are possible at the same time. I have one non-commercial community that makes about 12GB transfer per month, and number of them surfing my pages is usually up to 15, but sometimes more than 30. It is phpBB2.

3) Again on DB: As I would transfer my DB here, and it is about 35MBs, please tell me is it possible to upload it at-once or I need to do it in small peaces of 1-2MB (hate this)?

4) How often the backups are made & are there data bases also backed up?

5) I'm from Europe, but speed of your site is ok. I hope that is the case with all of your servers.

I am sorry if I made this a hell of job for you, but this might help others also.

Big thanks in advance!

PS. If there is something more you think would be usefull for me to know, please let me know.

it should be relatively painless as the DNS propagates. this takes 24-72 hours. in that period some people might see the old site, others the new one.

15 concurrent db connections per account. now what does that? that means within a given slice of time 15 concurrent requests of the db. however, doing the math its many users in a given second because queries execute very quickly ( usually in thousandths of a second )

we can help move it for you. you could work with support to move it in one shot.

there are scheduled backups. however we recommend you use the tools that are in cpanel. to back up your dbs and site frequently. the restore feature through cpanel works flawlessly

backing up and restoring from your backups is a 2 click process.

Thanks a lot for very fast replay Sam .

Please just write me how can I change domain name registar to you? I am domain name owner, but my old host did registration for me, and I do not really know what should I do from the moment they change DNS to your host. Is there something me to do?

your welcome. thanks for your interest in surpass.

couple of things...

if you'd like to transfer your domain over to us that's fine as well. heres a link to a page that describes what to do. ( it's not a requirment for hosting though )

Domains: Transferring, custom DNS, etc.

however you dont need that to get up and running you can keep your domain with the current registrar and just edit the DNS information. or your registrar can do it. thats just a tiny section of the domain record that says where the server is that hosts your site lives( think of it like a street address ).

anyway what will happen is after you sign up for hosting you'll get an email with instructions. you will be able to get at your site by the ip address username - even before propagation starts to upload files and such.

in other words a link like http://ipaddress/~username/

hope this helps

i know this seems kinda confusing, but you'll see its pretty simple once the process starts.

Thank you very much Sam!

If not at the beginning, I'll do this transfer very soon, as I would like this renewal to be made automatically by you etc. I'm afraid I could forget things like that .

I would just like to add that if your domain is not registered under your name, you do not legally own it. So if you get your old host angry for some reason, they can do whatever they want with it. Just a word of warning...

I suggest asking them nicely to transfer it to Surpass and put it under your name, but do it nicely.

Hi SmartGuy,

Domain is registered under my name, and I am assigned as owner and admin of it . I have already contacted my host (they are really very nice - might be that's why I am so afraid of changes ), and they said they would change DNS to whatever I want, but from that moment on, they do not have to do with that domain name anymore, but me.

I'm researching Surpasshosting whole day today, & I must say I can not find anything else but possitive things . I'll join you very soon.
