vB Support - Is this the place?

Hello, all!

I've had a vBulletin for nearly a year now, and I'm quite fond of it (as are my members and mods, woot!). We switched to a cheaper, more reliable server in April--or so we thought. Recently, they've suspended us saying we've used up too much SQL space, despite the fact that they gave us hardly any warning, and we had deleted nearly half of our database in order to fix it. *growl*

We're a fairly large board--had 20,000+ posts, and over 500 members until they told us to downgrade. We went down to 400 members and 10,000 posts, and even deleted forums. This problem hasn't help, and now we're stranded.

I've heard people raving about this place, so I'm curious--can you support a fairly large, and growing, vB site? We're taking very special cautions to ensure we never grow as large as some other boards out there on the net--we like staying a close community.

If you can, what do you suggest as far as what to purchase? Remember that I'm 16 with no steady income, of course If you guys can help...you'll be a lifesaver. If you CAN'T support it, could you suggest a place where I could go? Either way, I'll still rave about you guys--I totally love what I see here anyway. Thanks so much, and have a better day than I'm having. LOL.

Thanks,
Becca

you're in a bit of a pickel there buddy. How does that feel by the way? I don't think I could fit in a pickel, I'm too big. Maybe you're in a GIANT pickel? Are you?

anyway: There isn't a host out there that likes people to use up all the sql resources. However, surpass is quite nice about what they do and don't let you do. Since I don't know what kind of load you would put on the server, the only thing I can suggest with absolute certainty is a dedicated server. You would probably need to email surpass directly for exact information. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

by the way: Dedicated servers aren't too cheap.

At least not as cheap as I would like (maybe 20 cents per decade would be better)

Quite a pickle. I didn't know they came quite so big. I do wonder if there's a jar large enough to hold them--can't have these things rolling around in the wild, you know.

I've been poking around with my older, wiser, far better, I'm-quite-inferior-to-her sister (...she'll probably read this over, and she has the money, *cough*) with dedicated servers. Seems you guys have the best deals (*applause*) and we're very interested. We're looking into it.

My concern: Do you suggest a vB to take up an entire dedicated server, or do you think we could give out space for small personal sites? Obviously, no other boards could be on there with us.... Whoever helps me out gets a pickle--er, cookie.

Thanks so much, Dale! You have indeed helped me out lots.

ETS: LOL! Welll... I wanted a summer job, but I had 2 weeks of family vaycay, then this week off, next week I have Drum Major camp, then I go right into Band Camp and then school starts. Time = Non-existant. I can't work during the fall because of Marching Band, the winter is off-limits for the school musical, and spring is bad because I suck at school, LOL!

Besides, when would I be able to manage my sites, and keep people like you in business LOL! I love this place, you guys are great.

you can absolutely use the server for more than one site. being a dedicated server, you can do whatever you like to it/on it. Minus anything illegal of course. It's up to you what you do with your space and bandwidth, and you've got plenty of it.

Then there's the incredible support. That alone sold them for me. I found places cheaper than them, but none that could help me as much as they could. Emmanuel basically held my hand through the entire process of switching hosting companies.

20,000+ posts, and over 500 members
My board has 30,000+ posts and nearly 600 members and it's on a shared server with no problems.

It all depends on how active the board is at any one time, if it uses up too many server resources and increases the load it will affect other sites on the same server and you may need semi-dedicated or a dedicated server. I regularly have 25+ people on my board at the same time but they are not all active on the board at the same exact time. If you have 80-100+ on at the same time it will probably cause some problems.

If your hosts say it's SQL space and not the server load that's the problem then it doesn't seem that it's the amount of people on the board that is causing problems

Is your board heavily modified, bexie? If you've added lots of scripts to it you may find that that's the cause for the extra SQL usage.

I definitely recommend going Shared right now with a plan that will accomodate your current bandwidth needs... if that doesn't work, perhaps you can take donations (my guild has currently financed at least three months worth of dedicated server without a cent out of my pocket).
