Thumbs up

Hello,

I am looking for a new web host for my site, which is primarily for an open source course management system called Moodle. I recently adopted this software to provide an online complement for my English Language classes at my university here in Korea where I am a visiting professor. The site will need to host a number of courses comprising over one hundred students starting in September.

I have narrowed my search down to two web hosts and you are one of them! I want to ask you some questions to help me decide which one I should finally choose.

My main issue concerns the need to have as much control over technical aspects of my site as possible. The following are some of the technical issues I will be faced with in installing the moodle software on your server.

1. I need to have some way of transferring the data files from my old server to the new one and then untarring them. Unless I have some kind of SSH access then this will require me to download the files to my computer and then upload them again, which is time-consuming and fiddly.

2. I will soon be installing the new version of this software, which is 1.1 (thus I will be unable to use the Fantastico installer, which doesn’t support this version). Then I will need to be able untar the installation file directly on the server. I also need to be able to automatically archive directories for backup purposes. Will this be possible?

3. I need to be able to set the owner of my moodle data directory to the web server (“apache” or “nobody”). I doubt I can change ownership like this via the cPanel and will probably need SSH access to do it.

4. I need to check certain settings in the httpd.conf and php.ini files. Will I have access to these?

5. I need PHP version 4.1.0 or later, with the following settings:
o GD library turned ON, with support for JPG and PNG formats
o Sessions support turned ON
o File uploading turned ON
o Safe Mode must be turned OFF

I would really appreciate it if you would clarify these issues for me so that I can have an idea of how flexible your service would be for my needs. I am only too aware of the need to have security in mind with regard to SSH type access, however I feel I need this functionality and would like to have it as part of my hosting package. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance, Tim.

I'm no Admin but,

SSH is available for install.

I think you might get some of your answers by checking http://www.soulphoto.net/phpinfo.php. That is the server I am on. It should be typical.

You'll get more technical answers after this response, I'm sure.

Unfortunately nobody else *has* replied in almost 24 hours!

I know my questions were rather technical but I'd appreciate any replies, otherwise I will have no choice but to take my business elewhere.

Well I seen your Questions Last night But I didn't reply as I am not a Surpass Employee, infact half of the admins in the forum is not employed by Surpass, they just help moderate the forum. The Surpass Employees do not use the Board as much as the users. This is a Users Helping Users Board. The play on words is This Community is a Surmunity. A employee will check this board usualy every 2 days. Unless there is a server issue then they hang around more.

Best way to get questions answered is by email that have to do with times of staff.
