Hi,
I've been designing web pages for four years now, but my knowledge in coding is restricted to HTML and CSS and some simple Javascript that I learned from those cut-and-paste sites. What is the next language I should learn that will be practical and help me in web designing? XHTML? Javascript? PHP? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. - Peter

PHP is a definite. It is a very efficient and easy language to learn. You will also need to delve into Javascript a bit, as there are some client side things you will find you need to do on occasion.

You may find PHP harder to learn than...lets say...HTML or something. But there is no comparison. PHP is simply better and more applicable in todays dynamic content. Its more efficient and easier to manage, the simple integration with databases obviously adds endless uses. The extra time needed to learn PHP is by far worth it. PHP is pretty simple to catch on to if you know languages like c# or c++.
Regards, Joe

Okay, seems like everyone is unanimous that PHP should be the next language I should learn.
So now, where should I start? On the web? Or with a good book? Any specific recommendations? Thanks. ![]()

PHP Freaks and PHP Complete are both very good websites for learning PHP.
Edit: It appears that PHP Complete is under a reconstruction. |

Webmonkey has a decent amount of stuff on PHP, though a bit out dated. Also, when you grasp the language and need a reference, PHP Net is the final resting place of your browser.
