I think you should can the false advertisements and just be honest. On the front page of surpass put:

"Surpass Support is proud to offer a 30 hour response time... (unless of course you only submit a ticket and neglect to post your issue in the forum. In which case, we will ignore the issue indefinitely)"

But then again, that whole honesty thing, I guess that's just me being idealistic....
Hi wwwc21
I understand your frustration and will get you an in depth explanation of the situation over the ticket id. I will also arrange compensation for you because I believe this was our fault. Accidents happen and I believe there was a misunderstanding in a switchover/cancel/remove you requested. It was just your account affected, the server has been fine.

Speak with you soon

If making money online...

Shared hosting like Surpass is great for most purposes, but if you are making money online, and downtime is unacceptable, HAVE A BACKUP.

It's quite easy to set up external DNS with fail-over service (e.g. zoneedit.com), get a second hosting account somewhere else. Alternatively, get a dedicated server and/or put your own server up in a good data center.

Either way, be realistic about uptime and site swap-overs. Even a conscious, reliable hosting company like Surpass will have some downtime.

I've had my stressful times with my sites here, mostly due to what appeared to be a chronic overload problem that should show up under routine monitoring (not noticed any problem lately). But all-in-all, this has been the best hosting for the $$ of the dozen or so hosting companies I've used.

If you are *really* losing $$$ from downtime, have a backup.

samatva i love you.

Could you please explain how zoneedit is different from per say having 4dns servers listed on your dns list for the domain?

I dont really understand how this failover works, and the site doesnt have much information on it at all.

Question

I'm also curious how having dual servers work and how to set it up. I have shared reseller hosting with someone else and Surpass... haven't really used my Surpass account yet...

Samatva - how does it work? if I have a site on my other hosting (which goes down about as often as Surpass) and have it linked (how?) to Surpass... and my other hosting server goes down, -- are you saying I could mirror the site on Surpass and no one would know it is down? How would that affect online orders of products? Is there a delay in switch over? Down times usually are only 30-60 minutes...

I should have checked zoneedit.com first... got the following info...

How does your failover service work?

Failover monitoring service works when you have two or more web servers running the same (or similar) web site.
  • First, you need the IP address for your domain, and get it working - then you add the failover monitor.
  • The failover monitor watches your web server(s) by hitting a URL you specify and looking for text in the results.
  • When the system detects that one of them is having an error, and the others aren't, it pulls the IP address out of the list.
  • If none of the IP's are responding and you have a failure IP/URL defined, then it points the site to the failure IP/URL.
  • If the system can't get to all of the IP's then it assumes that the fault is it's own connection - and it takes no action.
  • If any of your IP's come back online they are restored
This effectively and safely keeps your site online - even if one of your web servers is down. The average failure detection time is 10 minutes. This time varies depending on the speed of your site and the nature of the failure. Recovery times are faster, averaging 5 minutes.

I read that too, but it doesnt answer much....

Does this simply change DNS settings? If so, wouldnt that mean that you'd still be looking at approx 3 days for the new settings to propagate?

No. What it does is provide priority to the order of servers to access your site.

By using a failover, with a short TTL (time to live) your site will only be inaccessable for minutes, at the most. TTL tells name servers how often to re-aquire the address for the site. Kinda like DynamicDNS works - when your home IP changes, the dynamic DNS points people to the right place.

That make more sense?

John
