Like Puck mentioned... this is why one must first make friends with (kiss butt) Alpha Geek.

Alpha Geek probably doesn't have time... and shouldn't have to deal with everyone's personal computer related problems that isn't directly associated with company time.

And not the manager either. The alpha geek is lord of his domain.

Update

Okay, here is where I stand...
- The IT guy is willing to help. He will not get the firewall rules changed. He will not give me nor Surpass a firewall report. He continues to say that something on the server/network is indicating that virus. He understands this is a Linus server. He wants Surpass to contact him by e-mail to discuss the issue.

- Surpass said have the IT folks contact them through the ticket system. I asked they contact the IT guy directly via e-mail and then I got (paraphrasing) 'This is a issue at your work, not our issue. Sorry.' Ticket (RNE-124643) closed.

So, while this is not an earth shattering problem, I don't understand why support can't contact the guy directly.

This is basically all we can offer as well, sneagle. If your company has strict traffic rules, there's nothing we can do to change their policies.

I am checking on your ticket though as the reply could have been a little nicer and not so short, so I am checking to see what else was said.

For the record, we only help reseller clients directly but will help others if they contact us through your ticket.

Thanks Kayla. Do you have any idea what this virus he is talking about 'looks like' to a firewall and maybe why the firewall is blocking traffic from PASS50?

Also, is a firewall report a big secret, is that why they won't share it? Will it somehow compromise their security?

He realizes that the server is not infected. He just keeps repeating that the firewall is seeing something--a signature or port--that looks like that virus.

We likely have thousands of people accessing their Surpass accounts at work and this is the first time I hear of such a problem. Sounds like your admin is a very strict guy.. and maybe he is assuming too much about the situation and our servers. But in the end he is just doing his job which is protecting your computers. Can't argue much with that. I feel the same way about our servers.

cPanel does have quite a few ports open by default for various tasks - we would likely not be able to modify these settings to your admin's wants.

It would help if he would give us those lines from report though. Then we could say for sure what could or could not be done. Our abuse department is sent reports by the hour for various things. It's not a security compromise. If it's just something about *our* server and IP, then I don't see why he is protecting it so carefully. There's no reason to.

Okay, I am reviving this old thread with an update and still looking for help.

I sent the following e-mail

Quote:
It has been a long time since we last discussed this and I was wondering if we could revisit this issue. I still cannot reach my server msj3.com from work. It works from the wireless network. As you may recall, the server is a linux server.

If there is something the firewall does not like, I can contact the folks that own the server surpasshosting.com and see if they can fix it. I just need to know what exactly is preventing the site from working.
He replied
Quote:
The Internet provider’s IP range that your server is on was the largest conduit for the updates for the Virus of Feb 07-We shut down to ports that it was using for these controlled attacks for all services including MSj3.com

We will not be opening these port on our firewall.

As the guest network is segmented off of our network and has no physical connection, we have less concern of our clinical systems through this route.
I wrote back the following but have yet to get a reply
Quote:
Thanks for the quick reply. If I understand correctly, you are blocking the site solely based on the IP address? So, a new IP address for the site would fix the problem—as long as the new IP address is out of the banned range, right? Care to share the banned range so I can request a new IP?
Am I not understand him? Would dedicated IPs help?
