Anyone else getting a lot of 404 errors?
I've put in a ticket to support about this, but I'm curious if anyone else has this problem.
I've got a .html file on on of my sites. Around 11% of people that try to get it get a 404 error. From what I can see in the access logs, there is no pattern to this--it doesn't seem to be correlated with time, or what browser they are using, or where they are. In fact, some people will get the 404, hit refresh, and then get the page fine. I'm on pass12. |

Lives in a constant state of confusion thanks to all of this buffonery caused by Twitter and other social networking sites that bring us further and further apart from each other by giving us a chair to sit in instead of exploring the real world with friends.

Checking some logs it looks like the majority of the 404 errors are coming from not having a favicon but having the code in the head of the pages looking for one. Then there is the followup 404 of not having a 404.shtml file to handle the error of not finding the favicon.
If you need a favicon try this one. http://www.surmunity.com/favicon.ico

Yeah, I don't have a favicon, so expect those errors. It's the 404's for files that do exist that are troublesome. For example, there are many 404 errors for the file /WAR/talisman.html, which exists.
However, I HAVE just noticed that there IS a pattern, after all. It looks like almost all the people getting the 404s are on IP addresses allocated from RIPE, except for one whose IP address came from LACNIC. |

OK, I think I figured it out. Several years ago (at a time when I had nothing on my site that would have been of interest to anyone outside of my acquaintances), I dealt with some persistent spammers by blocking their IP ranges via .htaccess. This was supposed to be temporary, but evidently I forgot to remove it. I think this accounts for all the 404s. I've fixed the .htaccess, and expect that will solve the problem.
