[Article] File Formats

A file format is a particular way to encode information for storage in a computer file.

Image File Formats
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) - Commonly used method of compression for photographic images. Best for the web
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) - Used for animation and tranparent images, uses a palette of up to 256 distinct colors from the 24-bit RGB color space. Perfect for graphics and Logos with solid colors.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) - Is a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression. Created to replace GIF.
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) - Is a file format for storing images, including photographs and line art. Great for print work.

Page File Format
.html - File extension for HTML files.
.htm - File extension for HTML files. (works the same as above)
.php - File extension for PHP files, without it the PHP does not work.
.asp - Is Microsoft's first server-side script engine for dynamically-generated web pages.

More to come soon!
