[Tutorial] Using Joomla!

Joomla is a very powerful and sleak looking content management system that will have stuck to it for a while.

Installing Joomla

In Fantastico scroll to the category Content Management and click on the link that says Joomla!

On the overview page click on the new installation link to get things started.

Fill in the details asked on the detail page for your login and where you would like for the script to be installed in.

On the last installation page, you'll see all the details on the newly installed Joomla. You are even able to email the details to yourself or someone else, a great feature for keeping records.

Using Joomla

Click on the admin link on the last installation page. Fill in your login details and click enter to continue.

Welcome to the Joomla Control panel. Here is where you can edit EVERYTHING in regards to your website.

If by any chance you get a message about register_globals being turned on, on your server, no worries, you can easily turn it off for this script by creating a php.ini file and adding the following line:

PHP Code:
register_globals off

Its always good to start off with the settings of the website, so that later you don't have to manually change anything and give yourself more to work. Hover over the site link in the upper left hand corner menu and click on the Global Configuration link.

If at any point in time you run into a page to edit and it says title: unwriteable this means that you will have to manually make writeable by changing the permissions. You can do so by logging into your FTP account, finding the file and CHMOD-ing the file to write on other and group. If php suexecs is not enabled on your server you can save it to 766 which lets it write but execute, or if you do have enabled you can use the permissions 755 and have it work like 777 but much safer.

Be sure to look around at all the features and see what Joomla has to offer. At first it can be a little tricky, but in time you can get it. If you want to preview your website at any point in time, just click on the preview link in the upper right hand corner.

The default layout really looks amazing and gives you an idea of how your website can look. It even has sample pages up for your viewing.

Good luck!

More to come soon.
