It appears that my concern about stranded emails was much to do about nothing. The email client can still connect to the Surpass servers after the MX records are changed if Gmail is set-up as a different account. If you move from POP3 on Surpass to IMAP on Gmail, that will happen automatically in Outlook and I suspect in other clients as well. If the move is POP3 to POP3, you can still set up a second account.
That gave me a good idea, and I'd appreciate it if someone could provide confirmation that it should work. It should be possible to continue to use the Surpass server as a backup for Gmail down time (yes it happens). Just keep the Surpass server on the MX list as the lowest priority and continue to keep the two accounts in the client. If Gmail fails, messages will go to the Surpass server and download to the local client. I also created an Outlook Rule to move the messages to the Gmail account folder so it automatically syncs with Gmail when the server comes back online.
