I'm sure you guys get a lot of questions like this, but I'm really confused as to what I'm doing wrong, and could sure use some help.

I registered my domain with Nunames.nu. So when I got the email that says my account had been activated, I immediately went over there and changed my DNS information to what was specified in your email (and they charge me 10 bucks to do this, so I really hope I don't have to do it again).

However, it's been more than 72 hours (I did this between 11:30 PM and 12:00 midnight on Thursday, May 22), and my domain is still pointing to my old host. Yet, when I log into my Nunames account, it shows my DNS information as being updated!

I've read around the forum, and seen a few people advised to go into their control panel and change their DNS information there, but those were all people who signed up for their domains with you and not a seperate registrar (and I logged into my control panel anyway, and looked around to see if there was anything that needed changing, and I couldn't find anything, although I might have been looking in the wrong places).

Is this problem with me; is it something I did or forgot to do? Is it with my domain registrar, Nunames.nu, or is it with Surpass Hosting? I'd like to fix it as soon as possible (I've got a big vacation I'm leaving for Wednesday and I'd like to get my site back up by then). I've emailed the Nunames people, too, but who knows when they'll get back to me (I figured that this forum would be faster).

If you need any information in order to look into this, my name is Amanda Miner, and my domain is Haruka.nu.

Thanks so much for your time.

The first thing you need to do is determine if your DNS has updated anywhere at all. If not, then your registrar has not sent out the updates. A good way to do this is to do an nslookup on a few different DNS servers.

Example:

c:\>nslookup www.domain.com nameserver
...
c:\>nslookup www.yahoo.com ns.tampabay.rr.com

Here are a couple of name servers to try it with:

ns.tampabay.rr.com
ns1.tampabay.rr.com
ns2.tampabay.rr.com
ns3.tampabay.rr.com
ns4.tampabay.rr.com

If you get 2 different responses from a list of name servers, that means your update is in process throughout the world and you just have to wait it out. If you get the same IP from all of them, and they are all the old IP, then you (or your registrar) did something wrong.

The name servers above all update at different intervals based on the TTL (Time To Live) that the authoritative server gave them. This means that one of them may update "yahoo.com" at 3:40PM, while another updates it at 8:20 a.m. - it depends on when the last successful update took place. This makes them an excellent place to test DNS as they are not all the same.

I went and did the nslookup as you suggested, each server came back with a different IP address but each server also gave me a "non-authoritative" answer with the same IP address that I was told to update my DNS information to include (along with the DNS) in the email I was sent when my account was activated. Is this a good sign?

here is what you should get:

Quote:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
© Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>nslookup n715dp.com ns.tampabay.rr.com
Server:  tampfldns05-amp.tampabay.rr.com
Address:  65.32.1.65

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    n715dp.com
Address:  216.67.228.32

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>
the number you want to look at, in this case is 216.67.228.32, that is the IP address of the Surpass server my domain is on. What you need to determine is if the IP showing under "Non-authoritative answer" is the Surpass server IP or your old server IP. If they are all the same, and they are the Surpass IP then your updates are going through and may not have made it to your ISP yet. If they are still the old IP (all of them are) then your updates are probably not going through.

What is the domain? I'll see what I can dig up.

I didn't see that you had put your domain name in the original post.

I did a query on several different name servers, the ones listed above and a few others, and they all came back with 216.67.239.167 which is a Surpass web server. If you are still having trouble on your end, it is probably due to your ISP not updating yet, but due to the fact that several name servers (in fact, all that I have tried) are showing a Surpass web server IP, I would say that your ISP should be updated soon.

Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for all of your help! Currently it still hasn't switched, but at least I know that it's at least on its way to being updated! So I'll start uploading my stuff at the alternate address they gave me to use before the DNS changes, so that hopefully, if it decides to change while I'm on vacation, everything will be ready. Hopefully.

Thanks again. I really appreciate it.
