Question MySQL has gone away

Throughout my time using Simple Machines Forum (SMF) my most frequent aggravation has been the error "Database Error: MySQL server has gone away".

I'm not real keen on what causes this. In the past it has occurred when I attempted to apply a modification to the forum. Lately it occurs at random when I do something very simple like attempting to view a forum member's profile. Surely this isn't so taxing on the server that it would cause an error?

I've done a little bit of research and I'm curious as to what the max_allowed_packet value is set to default on shared servers and I'm also curious as to if this value can be changed on shared servers?

I'd really like to do something, anything, to make this error show up less frequently or go away completely. Any suggestions?

max_allowed_packet is set to 1047552 bytes, or about 1 meg. I can't imagine that wouldn't be enough for your uses. Your best bet would be to put in a ticket, and tech support can go through the sql error log and see if they can find a more descriptive error
