Email mailshot to 50K accounts? Is this ok?

    Hi Guys.
Looking to send out 50,000 emails to a mailing list (not spam).
We currently have a reseller shared server but we dont want to bring it down or upset anyone...

Is it ok to use a shared server to send this volume of emails? or shall we rent a dedicated server for a month in order to do this?

The email service is a one off mailshot that we are doing so we probably wont need it again.

Also would there be any chanced of us getting blacklisted?

We are looking to use Joomla + Acymailing software to run the email campaign.
    Thanks
    Adam.

I can't say if the reseller server will be OK by itself, but I have seen people talk about mailing list programs that use throttling to send messages in blocks to stay under the limits imposed by hosting providers.

    From the Surpass Mail Policy:
Clients hosted on our shared or reseller servers may only send up to 350 individual pieces of mail per hour.
    (reference)

I would look into such software to limit your mailing to 350 per hour, which will unfortunately take quite a while, approximately 6 days with that many recipients.

Not sure if a dedicated server would be worthwhile with setup fees, etc. for only one month, but I haven't shopped dedis for a while.

    Hope this helps.

Since this is only a one-time list, there are a couple of things you could do. One would be to throttle sending the emails to stay within the hourly limit (if they aren't time sensitive). Another option would be to use a mailing list service. It will cost you, but since it is a one-time mailing I don't think it would be that much.
