Control bandwidth Usage
Hi, im not sure if this is the right place to post this question, so sorry if it isnt, but i was wondering if there is a way with cpanel that you can controll the amount of bandwidth a subdomain uses. Like only allow X GB's of transfer for this subdomain.
I have the power package. |

There is no really wrong place to post a question.
As for an answer, I don't believe there is. It'd be a really nice feature though, for sure.

You have to check it manually by viewing the stats. And if you are a real guru you can try fetch out the bandwidth from stats files. They are located somewhere in your home folder ... But the easiest way is to do it manually and check the stats.

I know you can write a script for it, but it'll be a tedious job to do.

Short answer - NO.
Cpanel does not support it. Could you write a script? Perhaps, but very potentially much more trouble than it's worth. IF YOU ARE A RESELLER the answer is different... You can create "cpanel" accounts in WHM that are simply subdomains of any domain you own and host. THey'll have separate space and limits, but be related in DNS to the master domain. John

You can make a script that is activated regularly with cron jobs but because cpanel may update and change the directory, may become a pain. but then you'd have to tell it to re-name the subdomain folder, and make a new one under it's name with index.html saying somthing like sorry bandwitdth exceded; to actually stop the bandwidth/use of the site (ofcouse the new index will use about 1kb per view)
checking the subdomain manually is the best idea, unless ofcourse you gonna be hosting about 100 of them. reseller of course is the easest route + you can sale it in an offical way. |

what im trying to accomplish is i have a subdomain that i host media files that i have created (music videos made from video games), i want to be able to restrict like how many people can download a day, or how much bandwidth it is allowed to use...
In the past ive gotten alot of bandwidth taken up and my whole site has shut down, i will upgrade my package for more bandwidth but it would be nice to have some way of protecting the whole site from going down because of downloads. Thank you for the answers so far. |

Ahh, well that makes it a bit easier....
you could create a set of scripts that required login to download. Then you could have some sort of script that tracked what the user had downloaded, and deny them if they exceed the limits you've specified. Something like this might exist on hotscripts or something...
