suitable hosting plan?
Hi all,
I hope this is the right place to ask my question. I would like to know what the best hosting plan for an online TV-Show is - a dedicated server? Also there is a demand to convert video files between video formats and this should happen on the server as a background process. Thanks. |

Will this be streaming or static files?

If it's streaming, and/or you believe it will be using up a lot of resources, then dedi is probably the way to go.

icecast now streams .ogg video (im very excited)
otherwise i'd recommend a windows based streaming software will you be uploading the master stream or will it already be on the server? if your uploading it your going to need a really good connection for video (think T1) or if its on the server you'll need a powerfull one for all the encoding

Thanks for your recommendations. OGG sounds good as a container format, because it is open, but unfortunately I don't have experience with it.
I was going to use Darwin streaming server, because QuickTime player is available for Windows and Macintosh for free and in fact is very widespread. Are there enough players capable of playing back the audio/visual content streamed with icecast? I am mainly interested in Win/Mac platforms. The stream will be on server. It will be uploaded before streamed. And yes, the video files must be converted there if not in desired format. |

You should still be able to stream real video without having to install a streaming server. http://forms.real.com/rnforms/produc...producerbasic/

To stream it how he want's he'd need to fork over quite a bit of dough and get the Helix Universal Server Unlimited and even it wouldn't do everything he want's
