Hmm. I doner how well the "Streaming Radio" business would be. Getting a server, setting it up for streaming stations, and charging people minimal amounts to use it.

David:
All your talk of copyright issues (licensing) are appreciated but accounted for in my case. Plus, SHOUTcast provides a process to report such issues [to AOL], so another solution that burdens me with more bureaucracy (i.e. your description of Live365) is not appealing and harder on "business". Back to your earlier question of what I am planning on broadcasting (not really planning anymore, since it's already been going for a week): OrganizedHardcore Radio is a continuous non-stop stream of DJ mix-sets produced by my friend and I. There is no interruptions from announcer(s) or advertising - just uninterrupted mixing of techno, trance, house, and a dash of hardcore. The goal is to raise awareness of the musicians/DJs and help us develop business (bookings for events) and an audience/fan-base. Travis: I emailed you. Here is a question I posed, which you can answer here or by email: Why not use SHOUTcast instead of Icecast? I have set-up Icecast before, but was not pleased with the fact that you can't get listed in the SHOUTcast directory, which has a large audience and is piped right into Winamp out-of-the-box. Ideally, I would like to be streaming on both Icecast and SHOUTcast. |

When I was talking about copyright, I was more getting at the fact that somewhere someone is going to have to pay the royalties for this. If AOL does this somehow, than that's good.
I was never much into the techno, dance, etc types of music when I would dj. More of a turntablist, and thinking of jumping back into that. Good luck with it though. |

David, AOL is responsible for enforcing copyright, but the content was assembled by my friend and I, so it is our own work. In addition, not all music is commercial and requires royalties to be paid for it. I would have thought that someone so close to Open Source software would have thought about the fact that not all music is being raped by bureaucrats at the expense of musicians/artists. I'm not really interested in playing music that is easy to find on TV and the radio, which would just be redundant with a commercial music industry that is all about being very saturated, repetitive, and over-played. Anyhow, the roots of electronic music are underground and rebelious.
Turtablism definitely makes for an exciting musical performance. I like it when an artist really influences the materials in their performance, rather than just putting out someone else's work with nothing new - might as well just check out the original work in such a case. I do like to manipulate the audio; in my mind, repetitive sounds (like most electronic music) do well with the added creativity. Thanks for the kind wish. I'm sure we'll see each-other around in the time to come, be it on the web or on a stage ;-) |

It's got nothing to do with all that. It's about the fact that internet radio has stiff rules put on it in regaurds to playing anything copyrighten. I believe it was Congress who passed a law a few years ago that caused internet radio stations to have to pay higher royalties than normal broadcast stations, due to their "world wide audience" I believe it was. It's why so many of them dropped out of site and had to close up shop. Basically, I was just trying to make sure you weren't going to end up being one of those crushed by it. On the topic of mainstream radio stuff, as far as I can tell, MTV has only one song that they just play to different videos. Heh, I'm not much for the stage. Breaks my concentration. |
